"No," I replied shortly, offended by the idea. But then I softened. What else was he to think after all? "No, it was my penance given to me by the Priests of Kushiel."

“Oh,” I said, wondering what could require such penance but not even tempted to pry so much as to ask. “I’m sorry if my question upset you.”

"No, it's alright," I replied, calm now as it wasn't his fault. "What else were you to think?"

“I shouldn’t have asked though. I am sorry for prying,” I told him. “Is the medicine working yet?”

I thought for a moment, taking stock. "Yes, it's beginning to," I replied. "I'm glad you had it on hand."

“I don’t use it often, but I always make sure to keep it in case I need it,” I said, smiling. “A couple more minutes and then we’ll get you up and bandaged.”

"What time is it?" I inquired, having completely lost track of time. "Just wondering if I'll make it home for the dinner hour. I hate to miss a meal."

I chuckled, judging by his size and obvious strength, he didn’t miss many meals.
Rising, I went to check my time candle. “It’s four past noon,” I told him.

"Oh good," I said with an amused grin. The drug was really starting to kick in now, making my thought just a little fuzzy. I didn't mind, the clarity of the pain was overrated. "You want me sitting up now?"

“I’ll help you if you’re ready,” I said, returning to the table and ready to help him sit up slowly.

I managed to get upright with his aid, and I was thankful the entire way up that I had let the drug kick in before attempting it. I made my breathing slow and even, managing the pain that crept through the soft haze.

Once he was sitting up, I stepped back. “Do you need a moment before the bandaging?” I asked.

"Thank you, but it's fine, go ahead," I replied with a smile for his consideration.

“Alright,” I said, reaching for the bandages. “Hold your arms up as bit and I can do the rest.”

Ah. Here came the tricky part. With the pain centered around my shoulders, it was difficult to lift my arms and engage those muscles, but I managed, gritting my teeth.

“Just a little,” I told him, beginning to wrap the bandages around his torso. “I’ll be quick as I can.”

"Thank you," I whispered in reply to his promise, lowering my arms slightly.

I had done this often enough that it was quick work, I did however spend extra time putting extra bandages around the upper portion. I tied off the bandages and stepped back.
“All done.”

I lowered my arms with relief, breathing deep to control the sensations it prompted. "Wonderful," I said, reaching for my purse. It was more than I had signed for, but for what he had done for me, I felt he earned every copper. "Here," I said, handing him the coin filled bag. "Thank you again."

“I’m glad I could help,” I said, taking the purse and setting it aside. “Do you need help with your shirt, or are you leaving it off?”

"It's warm enough to go without," I said as I stood. I collected my shirt and then carefully offered my hand for a shake, mindful of pulling the muscles of my shoulders too far.

Carefully, I shook his hand. “Did you bring a carriage? There’s usually one for hire nearby if you didn’t,” I told him.

"It's not far to walk," I replied with a little smile. "There's a little cafe about half way home where I can stop for a rest if need be."

My brow furrowed. I wanted to insist he take a carriage. The strain on his muscles from walking even that far would only increase the pain and slow the healing.
“You’ve taken an awful lot of pain medicine just now, both in the water and through the salve. A carriage might be safer,” I said, trying to sound logical and not pressuring.

I could tell from the look on his face that he didn't approve. I almost sighed in resignation. I hated feeling helpless.
"Perhaps you're right," I conceeded. A marquist was as good as a chirgueon in matters such as this, so I took the advice. "Where do they usually wait?"

“Just down the street. Stay here and I’ll go wave one down,” I said, relieved that he had agreed. I left him there and went out to wave down a carriage.

I grumbled, but I waited until I heard the bells on the door sound before I did. Deep down I appreciated his concern, but it was annoying. I had been bedridden for far too much time these last months. I got up slowly and collected the jars he had set out as I waited for his return.

I signaled a carriage and then returned to the back room.
“It’s on its way,” I said to him, smiling. “Please let me know if you need any more ointment or anything else.”

I smiled in return. "Of course. And I'm sure we'll see each other again when I need more touch-ups. Hopefully it will be a while," I said wryly, moving into the outer room and towards the door.

“Hopefully,” I agreed with a chuckle as I followed him into the front room. “Be well and may Elua keep you.”
