I smiled and chuckled as I watched her face as she spoke. "Hmm, well... I suppose to should start my journey then."

"Oh, it seems to me that you've started it already, hmm?" I smiled and took a sip from my glass, watching him with interest. From the way our assignation had gone, it did seem as if he were still finding his way, and a part of me envied him that. I was not that much his senior, but gone were the days when everything seemed possible and all roads were open.

I chuckled and nodded at her comment, a silence settling between us before it was interupted by our meals. I pulled back reluctantly and made space on the table for out plates, my eyes glancing to the matron as I murmured my thanks.
Once she was gone I turned my attention back to Avianna. "Looks good." I said smiling as I placed a napkin in my lap.

I followed his lead with the napkin, looking down at my food and then back up at him. "Yes, it does. Hopefully it tastes as good as it looks."
I took a bite and savored it, it was definitely as good as it looked. "Mmm, delicious." I said, taking a sip of my drink and then smiling over my glass at Maric.
"Thank you again for inviting me to lunch, Maric."

I looked over my dinner before smiling up at her comment. "You're welcome Avianna." I said softly. "I'm pleased you decided to come."

"Now how could I say no to this?" I said, gesturing at my plate with a grin. "Even Mandrakes need to eat..." I teased, then added, "And besides, I enjoy your company."

I chuckled softly at her comment and smiled wide at her comment. "I enjoy your company too Avianna." I replied. "And I was happy that you accepted."

"So," I said, picking idly at my food, "other than shopping for your sister, what have you been up to?"

I began to cut into my meal as I thought about her question. "Nothing much really." I said softly. "There are a few fetes that my foster family has been invited to, so I may have a different story when I see you next." I chuckled as I glanced to her.

"Ah, fetes." I said, smiling knowingly. I went to my share, though I was usually 'working' at most social affairs I attended. I had occasionally been invited simply to enjoy myself, but I found that I grew bored easily without something specific to do. "I would enjoy hearing all about them, from the point of view of someone who is just there to have fun."

I chuckled and regarded her for a moment; how different our lives were. "They're not always fun," I said smiling after I had chewed down a bite. "Some times their boring." I shrugged. "It all depends on who's there really."

I nodded, swallowing a bite and remarking, "Oh, I have to agree with you on that point. I have been to some interminably long affairs myself." I took another sip of my drink, then smiled across the table at him. "And do you have an escort to these fetes? The right company can make even the dullest event fly by."

I shook my head. "Not usually no," I said softly as I took a bite then chewed. "Though Since I've been here I've been going to a lot of fetes with my foster family, Azriel and his niece Lilli." I added.

I nodded, remembering that he'd mentioned them before. "Do you get along well with your foster-family? I know it can be difficult to come to live with strangers." Ah, how I remembered my first awkward day at Mandrake! Still, I had been so at home there it had taken me no time at all to adjust. I imagined, however, that that might not be the case for everyone who had to leave behind their home for new surroundings.

I nodded. "I do," I said softly after finishing a bite. "Azriel is very...interesting." I gave her a bit of a playful smile and a raised brow. "He's Shahrizai." I chuckled at that and then took a sip of water. "His niece is my age, she's and he are strangely similar, but she's a lot more... hmm, determined then him." I shrugged.

"A Shahrizai, hmm? I can imagine them being difficult to live with." I said, chuckling softly. I had known quite a few Shahrizai in my time, and 'difficult' could be an understatement. "At least the niece is your age, that must be nice." I felt a stir of something ... was it jealousy?... no, that was impossible. I shook it off and finished my drink to cover my discomfiture, hoping he wouldn't notice.

I chuckled. "He's not like regular Shahrizai." I said as I took a drink to mimick her. "He doesn't even look like one, and he's half Namarrese." Azriel was always a keen interest to me. The more time I had spent here, the more I had learned about him. On one side he had Kushiel's blood, a line of Shahrizai near pratically unbroken. On his mother's side, a near perfectly unblemished Namarrese line. It was a curiosity indeed, he always peaked my interest... but not in that fashion. "Lilli is very nice."

"He sounds quite intriguing, actually." Though Shahrizai were of occasional interest to me, I imagined a Valerian would be more interested in this mans peculiarities than I was. The niece was a bit more of an interest to me, though I couldn't have said why. Or perhaps I could have, though I chose not to. "And the niece? Is she Shahrizai, or from the Namarrese half?"

I swallowed down a bite of food as I looked at her. "Lilli is Namarese," I said softly. "Her mother is Azriel's half sister, same mother, different father." I shrugged. "Its a bit intertwined."

I laughed as I took another bite. "As so many families these days are." For myself, my lineage was largely unknown, though it wasn't something I thought of overmuch. I was simply D'angeline, and that was as far as I took it.
"Well, I am glad to hear that you like it there, it will make your time in the City all the better."

I nodded. "I hope so, I don't wish to be a coward and return home so soon after arriving."

I chuckled at that. "Oh now, I wouldn't say that makes you a coward... the City is not always the right fit for everyone. I myself have never been anywhere else, but I have had many patrons who were from elsewhere that longed to return." It occurred to me that I didn't even know if I'd miss the City if I left it.
"I wonder..." I mused, twirling my fork in my food idly. "How far I would have to go before I longed to return?"

"That's a good question..." I said, considering. "Honestly, I had never given it much thought. I imagine I shall live out my days quite content on Mont Nuit." However, now that the thought had come into my mind, perhaps I should consider it more. After all, I had quite a bit of funds set aside, being in no hurry to make my marque. "Any place you reccommend?"

I shrugged and then chuckled. "You're probably find yourself at home in Kusheth." I suggested with a little grin. "I've always wanted to go to Alba." I added.

I laughed softly at that. "I don't know, there might be too many Shahrizai running about there for me to feel quite at home!"
When he mentioned Alba, I nodded. "I can see the allure of the place." I said, thinking on what I knew of it. "They have been good neighbors to us, that is for certain. You should go, if you like. I'm sure that your father couldn't argue with you seeing something of the world, as all young men should."

"Perhaps once I make my marque, I'll follow." I said, teasingly. It was an interesting idea, however, now that I had thought on it for more than a moment. I thought I almost had enough coin made up to have my marque completed, but I had balked, mostly because I wasn't sure what to do with myself afterward.

"Both?" I responded with a light laugh. This lunch was proving to be quite interesting; not only the company, but the topics as well. There was obviously more to the both of than what met the eye, and I was intrigued enough with Maric to try to see past the obvious.
"It is sometimes handy to have someone along who knows their way around a flogger, for example." I said with a wicked smile.
