"She's only fourteen?" I said, making a face before I could stop myself. "Well, she'll love having a 'big sister' to play with. I'm sure she will tell you all sorts of stuff. Children are very observant, more than adults like to admit. Trust me, I know."
"I'm not sure what to look for," I said truthfully, taking the ale from her and drinking a bit more. I was going to have to be very careful climbing down the trellis. I thought about the shirt hanging from it and smiled inwardly. "After all, I only have a hunch. Just look for things out of the ordinary, I suppose. A door that's locked, a stack of boxes covered with a sheet...listen to what the servants say, they're the eyes and the ears of the house. But most of all, talk to Rochelle and listen--really listen--to what she has to say. Why is her mother always gone? What does Daddy do all day? I mean, she's not an idiot, so don't speak to her that way. Just be a friendly, listening ear."
Suddenly I frowned. "The only problem...isn't Guy going to be around her all the time? It'll be hard to ask questions like that if he's there. I was even thinking of 'running into' you and Rochelle on some shopping trip, but I don't..." I sighed softly. "...I don't want to cause any more trouble than I already have."

I was accustomed to having older siblings, so I knew that Rochelle probably would enjoy my company. I nodded in agreement with Sandrine's words; children did often see more than adults gave them credit for.
"I'm sure I won't even have to ask many questions, young girls do like to talk about themselves." I said, laughing lightly. "And I'll just keep my eyes and ears open and I guess we'll see what we see."
"Hmm, leave Guy to me... I will figure out a way around him. In fact, I may even be able to get some information out of his as well." I tapped my finger against my lips, considering. "I don't think we're causing trouble. If Denis de Rouille isn't doing anything wrong, than this will come to nothing. If he is, then it's our civic duty to find out."

I laughed. "Civic duty? You must have spent too much time with me. That sounds like something I would say." Secretly I wished that I could be the one to get information from Guy, but it was obvious that it would be a lot better for Sophine to take care of that line of questioning.
"If there's ever a day where you and Rochelle will be out...without Guy...let me know. I'd love to come." I stood and yawned, stretching my arms over my head. "But I think now I should let you get some sleep." I looked into her eyes for a second, hoping she couldn't sense the tortured thoughts that even now weaved their way through my mind, and smiled. "Thanks for your help, Sophine, I feel much better." I leaned over and kissed Sophine gently on the cheek before I walked over to her window. "Tell Luc to be careful when climbing up, some of the vines can be rather prickly."

I laughed aloud at her assessment, it was true, I think she was beginning to rub off on me. Or at least bring out the latent troublemaker I'd always believed lurked under the surface.
"If we ever do manage to ditch Guy, I'll be sure to drag Rochelle to Orchis House to visit." I said, giggling at the thought. "I'm glad you feel better." I felt more optimistic already, happily intrigued by the puzzle before us. "Everything will be all right, Sandrine, you'll see."
I watched her go with a smile, then leaned over and hid the now-empty ale mug under my bed to smuggle down at some point tomorrow. I got up and wiped the tart crumbs from my bed and then closed my window, pausing to stare out and imagine if it Luc really did climb up... I determined to share that idea with him as soon as humanly possible.
Back in bed, snuggled deeply in my satin sheets, I returned to sleep amid thoughts of excitement at the intrigue we may or may not uncover.

I took the shirt I had hung there as I climbed down. I felt a flash of guilt that evaporated like morning dew. There was no way I would ever make love to Guy, no way he would ever hold me in his arms after we had finished, no way he would kiss my hair as we drifted off to sleep. I knew all that, and I accepted it--at least, I thought I did. And since I would never have that opportunity, it was a small thing to have a shirt that belonged to him. Would not Elua allow me this one conceit?
My trip back to Orchis was uneventful. As soon as I was in my room, I took off my dress, leaving myself naked, and then slipped the shirt over my shoulders. It was almost like wearing a dress to bed, one that was shapeless but held the unmistakable scent of Guy.
I cried myself to sleep that night, wrapping my arms around me as tightly as I could, wishing beyond all hope that it was Guy's embrace and not my own. For the first time in weeks, I slept soundly, my dreams almost too peaceful to be remembered. All except for one.
"Is that my shirt?" he asked, smiling at me. I nodded once, and he chuckled softly. "I have to admit, it looks better on you, Sandrine...but there's another look that I prefer for you..."
Before I could react, Guy pulled his shirt over my head, revealing my nakedness. He kissed me with abandon, and it felt as if his mouth was everywhere at once. I moaned as he lifted my leg up, ready to enter my silken depths...
I awoke with a smile on my face.
