It didn't take us long to reach the Patron. I could hear the conversations of happy customers outside of the building. It seemed pretty full--hopefully we would be able to find a seat. Patiently I waited for Keegan to open the door. Last time I had seen my mother I received a long lecture about how it was important to allow a man to be gentlemanly. Despite my often undignified actions, I did want to be seen as a lady.

I opened the door for her and bowed gallantly to let her proceed me inside.

I curtseyed and immediately regretted it, but I was able to stand without too much trouble. "Why thank you, kind sir."
Slowly I moved through the crowd to a table that was near a window so we could look at the people walking by. "Does this seat work for you?"

“Perfect,” I said, smiling and holding her chair for her. “What would you like to drink? I’ll go get the drinks from the bar.”

I sunk down slowly, allowing him to push my chair in. "How about wine?" I suggested. "Red is fine for me."

“Excellent choice,” I said, smiling. “Are you ready to eat or want to wait a little?”

"Unfortunately, I'm starving." I chuckled. "Order me whatever looks good. Surprise me. I could eat a horse. Or two."

“I think they may be out of horse, I’ll see what else they have,” I said with a laugh. “Be back soon.”
I gave her a smile and then wound my way to the bar.

I gave a shudder at that. I was only kidding about the horse. Would no one ever take me seriously?
The chair hit my back in a somewhat tender spot, and I slid so I was sitting at the front of my seat, drumming my fingernails against the table. "I guess this is what he meant by doing whatever he likes," I mused, staring idly out the window.

After a few moments at the bar I returned to the table with a tray. On it was a glass of red for her, a mug of ale for me and two plates with meat pies and sliced summer fruit on them.
“How about this instead of horse?” I teased, setting the tray down.

"Looks great to me," I said, "though one can never be too sure about what sort of meat they use..."
Unceremoniously, I grabbed my fork and knife and tore into my food. Keegan was lucky I had decided to use utensils.
After I swallowed a few bites and took the edge off of my hunger, I said, "You mentioned that you were interested in history. Any sort of history in particular? The history of only Terre d'Ange, or other places as well?"

She obviously didn’t come to the Patron if she wondered at the quality of the food. Devon was a stickler for such things as real, edible meat.
“Anywhere,” I said, having sat down and taken my own food and drink from the tray. “I just love history in general.”

"What's the most recent history you've read, then?" I asked, sipping my wine. "I'm interested in Jebean stories myself, for obvious reasons."

“I’ve actually been hunting out as much as I can find on Ruskovian history. I figured I might want to know some stuff about the country our Queen’s intended comes from,” I said before taking a bite of my pie.

That was an excellent point. I was rather focused in my interests, but it would be useful to know something about the way our country was headed. "How do their political interests differ from ours?" I asked, trying to sound smart.

“They seem to have a greater tendency to settle issues with violence, and their interests seem more towards acquisition than alliance,” I answered between bites.

I furrowed my brow, mulling that over as I chewed. "So not only will they have to marry each other, but they will have to marry the different interests and concerns of their countries as well."
Another sip. "At least they will marry for love, and not for political reasons. I have seen that in my limited reading...what a sad concept."

“I hope they are marrying for love. There doesn’t seem to be much political gain for Terre d’Ange in aligning with such a small, distant nation. The gain for Ruskovia will be immense though. If the reasons are political, then I hope the Queens advisors know what they are doing,” I said.

"Thank goodness all is at peace," I said, with a contented sigh. I felt much better with food in my stomach. "I can't imagine what that would be like. I'm sure I'm not as learned as you, but what little reading I've done paints a bleak picture of war, and I'm glad I have not witnessed it first hand. Luckily it seems that every country is content where they are. For now."
I took another sip of my wine, then set it down gently. "I'll never understand that desire to conquer people. It seems so much simpler and easier to live and let live."

“There are always nations or rulers looking to conquer others, even when it may seem that peace is reigning. When someone is greedy by nature, and yet they have everything they could possibly want from their own nation, they look elsewhere to satisfy their desires,” I said then took another sip of ale. “I think it’s all a matter of scale. The greedy business man can only conquer other businesses, he does not have the ability to conquer other nations, no matter how much he might like to.”

I pursed my lips as I considered that idea. "I wonder what I would conquer, if I was unsatisfied with life," I said, then looked at him. "If you could have anything, Keegan...anything at all...what would it be? What would you conquer?"
I tried to sit back, but the pain made me yelp a little bit and sit right back up. "I suppose I could take a trip around the world...or maybe that expensive necklace we saw...oh, or more patrons!...hm..." I trailed off as I tried to think of other things I might want.

I began to answer, but she went on as if she’d not asked me a question at all. I knew exactly what I’d want if I could have anything, there was no need to even ponder on it.
I returned to my food as she talked, feeling a bit unneeded in the conversation.

I looked at him strangely, as he did not answer my question. "Keegan, what's wrong? Was it something I said?" I started to add a joke, but suddenly it seemed as if he was in a solemn mood, and levity was not warranted. I took another sip, trying to be patient.

"What do you want more than anything?" I was genuinely interested in what he had to say, and I thought it an excellent question to ask people if I was trying to get to know them better.

I smiled at him, popping the last bit of the meat pie in my mouth, and wondered who he was talking about. I knew it wasn't me.
"Why, Keegan, I didn't know you were such a romantic. What a beautiful sentiment."

One corner of my mouth quirked upward, in a wry smile. "I can only hope that my experience will be as pleasant as yours. I haven't yet known what that is like."
"One day though, I hope to be just like you. Only better looking." I grinned winningly to show I was mostly joking.
