My eyebrows shot up, I’d found a touchy subject it seemed.
“Then what shall I say?”

"I am not even close to forty," I replied grumpily, turning back to my drink.

"I never thought you were," I told her, chuckling. "But if you won't tell me your age, then I will have to make something up." I shook my head. "I've never understood why so many people are vain about their age. You are how old you are, why does it matter what the number is?"

"Every year that goes by is a reminder of the things we haven't accomplished yet in life," I replied, still rather tetchy.

“Only if you look at life as a lack of things. Every year that goes by is a record of what has been accomplished, what has been created, of moments that will never happen again,” I countered.

He was two and twenty, I really should forgive him such naivety. "Remember you said you run from responsibility? You're also running away from disappointing someone by not fulfilling your responsibilities the way they want."

My fingers flexed and I looked down at the scar on my hand. “I run from the responsibilities others think I should fulfill, but not from the ones I take on myself. I know that the life my parents want for me is not the one I was meant for, I am not meant for a wife and children and a little villa on the estate raising goats and attending country political meetings. My parents introduced me to the life I should lead; you would think they would understand.”

"Expectations are rarely flexible," I said.

“But they should be reasonable, or at least appropriate,” I sighed.
I looked at her again. “I feel the need for air, would you care for a stroll?”

"You want to take a stroll in this neighbourhood? Really?" I gazed at my empty glass, and the last remnants of brandy in the bottle. "Just give me a moment," I said with a smile, pouring the remaining liquor in my glass and then tossing it back. "Alright, let's go flirt with danger."

I watched as she finished the liquor.
“If you’d rather not, I understand. It’s different for a man to walk these streets than it is for a lady.”

I raised an eyebrow as I stood. "Shahrizai, remember? Come on, let's get out of this dump."

Standing, I offered her my arm, smiling and wondering if she’d take it. She really didn’t seem to like me, I’d been surprised she accepted my invitation.

"Why thank you m'lord," I teased, almost mocked as I took his arm.

I just looked at her for a long second before looking away and leading her out of the tavern. I was in no mood to be belittled, I’d had enough of that from her tonight.

If looks could kill... Alright, I'd only be wounded, not dead. He wasn't very good at glaring. I blinked innocently. "I'm sorry, I thought we were playing at extravagant courtesy."

“No, I was offering you my arm out of politeness. I may be many things, but unmannered isn’t one of them,” I said plainly.

"Then what is one of your faults?" I asked.

“A tendency towards impious pursuits,” I answered as we strolled down the street.

"Wicked acts, but not wicked manners then?" I asked with smile as we moved through the dark streets, lit every few paces by torches.

“Exactly,” I said, looking around a little.

"I so rarely find one that admits to it though. It's rather refreshing," I simply replied with a smile.

"You sure are difficult to please," I muttered.
"Alright then, I shall return to mocking you," I said. "But only because you asked so nicely." At that I grinned.

"Generally yes," I said. "I have little time for getting the shade of grey just so."
