"It went well," I said smiling to her. "The petition was granted but more because of the fact that the Jaiden met with an unfortunate end." I pursed my lips. "Because of the sickness, she had a miscarriage and bled out." I said the words softly and ran my hand over her head.

I gasped and my fingers covered my lips. How terrible! My lips fell apart under my fingers, but I could think of nothing to say past them. I felt his hand on my head and looked up at him again. How must he feel taking up a position left vacant by such a terrible turn of events? "Oh, Marc," I wispered, laying my head against his chest.

I felt a jolt go through me. It was such a terrible way to die, and I couldn't imagine what Father felt about taking over as Duc after the former Duchesse had died like that. I bowed my head, to look at the ground, my mood suddenly sober. I sent a swift, silent prayer for the former Duchesse to Elua and Camael. May she rest in peace.

I felt sober at the death of Jaiden Liatris, but also a bit cheated. Father hadn't won his case over her because he was the rightful heir, he'd only gotten it because she died. Where was the victory in that? Still, it was very sad, and she'd been a venerable woman.

I held Veronique tight. "Yes, its a sad end. I was really hoping that it would be simplier and less...sad." I said softly. "But the Queen did say that out of all the people that had put forth petitions, that mine was the most worthy." I shrugged and looked to my children.
"Come now, lets not spoil our reunion." I said smiling and looking to the three of them.

I lifted my lips, for the sake of the children and not spoiling their first day in the City. I looked at them a moment, grateful to have them. It wasn't the first time and I knew it wouldn't be the last. "Indeed," I said, trying for a brighter smile. "let's not spoil today. We'll Light a candle for Jaiden first thing in the morning. For now, what do you say we find a comfortable place and perhaps some refreshments? I, for one, would like to explore our new house before I get lost in it hunting for my breakfast!"
