"I'm glad I could find something you'll eat," I said with a smile, kissing her quickly again before sitting back up and setting about finishing my food.

“I think you know me better than I know myself sometimes,” I said, chuckling between berries.

"Oh here, they sent you some cream," I said, having eaten enough to unearth the little cup. I moved it so it was easier to reach, hoping she would take it with her fruit. Strawberries were good, at least she ate them, but she needed something to put some weight on those too-prominent bones.

I looked at the bowl of cream and then away quickly, swallowing reflexively. “These are too good to need cream,” I said, giving him a smile as I took another berry. In truth the thought of the thick cream almost made me gag.

I almost sighed, but stopped myself. I went for teasing instead. "You're going to make me search high and low for food for you, aren't you?" I asked with a light-hearted grin, offering her a slice of my apple.

“No,” I said, taking the slice of apple and toying with it slightly. “I’d rather you didn’t.”

She seemed to be wasting away before my very eyes, it was hard to ignore. "I'm worried, is all," I said gently, the teasing gone.

I looked up from the slice of apple and could see the concern on his face, the real worry in his eyes.
“I’ll try and eat more, I promise. Just don’t make an issue of it, it will only make my stubborn side kick in,” I said, giving him a soft smile. I brought the slice of apple to my mouth and ate it.

I smiled in return, though I don't think it fully reached my eyes. "My lips are sealed then," I said before turning back to the last dregs of my meal.

I swallowed the last of the apple around the lump in my throat. I had hoped for a more positive reaction at my promise. He didn’t believe me fully.
Even the last couple strawberries seemed unappetizing now. Wordlessly I rose from the bed, retrieving my robe and slipping it on as I went to my dressing table. I sat on the stool and began combing the tangles from my hair that had formed in the breeze outside.

I had hurt her feelings, and only because I couldn't help but worry for her. I still felt incredibly guilty about getting her sick, and now I couldn't even help her get better.
I finished the last of the food and put the tray aside, standing and going to her. Once I was at her side I knelt, abeyante out of habit, and looked up at her. Hoping I could find a way to make her smile again.

For half a moment I ignored him, and had it been anyone else I could have gone on ignoring him. I put down the comb and looked at him. I reached out and ran my fingers through his hair.
“You need a haircut,” I said softly.

"You like it short?" I asked just as softly, thankful that she wasn't so mad that she wouldn't touch me.

“It’s so thick that if it gets any longer my fingers won’t move through it,” I murmured, letting my fingers caress along his jaw as I brought my hand back to my lap.

"It's an absolute pig when it's long," I admitted with a soft smile, though I would have swallowed my complaints if she had mentioned she liked it longer. "I have to visit the marquist as well, perhaps I'll take a day to get myself ship-shape and looking good again."

“You still look good, just a little scruffier than normal,” I said, returning his soft smile. I leaned over and kissed his forehead gently.

"Maybe scruffier than normal now, but Trinette told me once that when I first arrived at Valerian, I was the scruffiest thing she had ever laid eyes on," I said, smile turning into a grin.

“Do you miss it?” I asked him softly, watching him. “The home you knew for so long? Your friends?”

"Sometimes. But you never mind when I visit, so it's not so bad," I said truthfully. "I must admit, it was quite the change moving in here. Being able to wake up beside you makes up for any homesickness." I smiled that foolish, 'I'm in love' smile.

I returned his smile, though inside I felt a twist of guilt. I’d taken him all the things he’d known and loved. I loved him so much, and I knew I couldn’t survive without him, but it didn’t help to assuage that tingle of guilt.
“You should visit with your friends more if you miss them,” I said softly, my fingers running through his hair again. I felt very lonely all of the sudden. Christophe was all I had in the world, and it wasn’t fair to make him be with me so much just because of that.

"But I have to be careful that I don't miss you," I replied, my smile turning lopsided. I leaned into her caresses, enjoying them.

“You won’t miss me, you’ll be having too much fun,” I said, smiling still. I leaned in and kissed his forehead again.

"I could invite some of them over for dinner one of these nights, and you can meet them," I offered, smiling more under the steady stream of affection. It meant that she wasn't mad at me anymore.

"Maybe next week, after the City has settled down some?" I replied, happy that she seemed to want to meet them. Course, there was always the possibility that she already knew some of them... I veered my mind away from that train of thought, not wanting to ruin the moment.

“Whenever you’d like, my love,” I said, smiling again.
I turned back towards the dressing table. “I should get dressed and go run a few errands,” I said, though in truth I just wanted to go back to bed. I felt so tired.

"Would you like some company?" I asked, not moving from where I knelt. Instead I watched her, my eyes flickering between her profile and her reflection in the mirror. Her beauty made my breath catch in my throat, even if she was looking thin and a bit pale.

I smiled back and then rose, kissing her cheek on the way up. "I'll get dressed as well then. Unless you want me going out like this?" I jested, for I wasn't wearing a stitch. I had lost the towel I had started with sometime before snuggling up with her in bed.

“I think you’d better dress or you won’t even make it to the front door without being mobbed,” I said, laughing softly.
