The idea sickened me like a punch to the gut, but I kept my face clear. "Well, that, at least, is a blessing," I said, referring to Sirena staying close to family. "Do you plan to have many children?"

At times I forgot how delicate Aramis's sensibilities could be and reminded the giggling part of myself to play nicely. "I have to have at least one to carry the line," I replied with a grin. "And with the introduction of new blood hopefully they'll not be as frail as myself, and the Shahrizai traits will show through anyway."

"Frail? My dear Sirena, what you lack in body you more than make up for in spirit," I told her, grinning. "I'm sure your children will be fine, and it will be fun to have nieces and nephews around. What do you think," I asked, teasing, "you could indenture one to me to work in the store if you decide you have too many."

"I don't think too many will suit me-perhaps only a couple," I replied, wrinkling my nose as I thought.

I returned to my plate, finding that I was still famished. "In any case, you must be sure to eat well, keep your strength up," I said. "There are many healthy items coming into the store if you want to send a servant over."

"Thank you, that's most kind, though I don't intend to go lighting any candles that soon," I replied happily.

I nodded. "Have you set a date?"

"Not so much- it's all been flowing in the tide of time," I told him with a serene expression. "I want as much of the family to be present as possible, so there are many arrangements to make."

"I'm sure there are," I said. "If you need to know about the best prices for flowers, catering, whatever, I can help. Don't want you to get swindled."

"People don't try to swindle me as a rule," I told him honestly. "I think, for some reason, I make them nervous and honest. I would appreciate the help, though- you likely know the best for all of those sorts of things."

I nodded, preening slightly. "I do," I said. "I would never permit you to get something from the back of a wagon for your wedding."

"And I trust you in that regard," I assured him, patting his hand softly.

Gods, merciful Kushiel, this wanting was becoming almost too much to bear. "I am glad," I said. "Are you finished eating?" I asked her softly.

"Of course," I replied, curious as to what he meant. "Are you?"

I nodded. "And it was delicious, thank you." I didn't want to eat and run, but I hoped that switching rooms might also change subjects.

"Do you have other things you have to attend to?" I asked serenely but with a bit of regretful sorrow. "Or would you rather have a drink in the salon while we speak?"

"A small drink," I said, smiling, "but I regret that I have work in the morning."

"That's most unfortunate, as I know it means you must keep this visit short," I said in regret as I led him toward the drawing room.

"I regret it as well," I said, following her to the drawing room, "but I predict business will slow after the Midsummer Faire, and then perhaps I will have a little more time to devote to family."
