It was the day following the Beltane fete when I knocked on Alexei's door. I needed advice, and there was no one I trusted more than my brother.

“Come in,” I called at the knock on my door. I was sitting at my desk returning correspondence.

I opened the door and stuck my head in. "You have a few minutes?" I asked.

“Of course,” I said, smiling and slipping back into Ruskovian. “Come in, come in.” I gestured to the chair on the other side of the desk.

I sat across from him, wondering exactly how to start. Telling him that I had found the woman I wanted to marry was probably just going to make him laugh. So I opted for a different approach for now. "What do you know of Lessandrie de Mereliot?"

“Not much,” I answered, leaning back in my chair and looking at my little brother. “Why?”

"I met her at the Beltane festival," I replied. It seemed my first tactic wasn't going to work, so I figured I might as well just come out and say it. Let him laugh, I was serious. "I was wondering... if you had any advice for courting a D'Angeline woman?"

He surprised a laugh out of me. “Already?” I teased. “One fete and you’ve fallen in love?”

"You haven't met her, obviously," I replied, shaking my head with a smile. "She's modest and kind and incredibly intelligent. And that's on top of beautiful. But... I'm not used to things here."

“You’re serious,” I said, sobering somewhat and leaning forward. “What exactly happened at the fete?”

"Nothing," I replied defensively. "Well, nothing she didn't consent to. I just kissed her. And thoroughly enjoyed her company."

“Fydor, I am not father, I would never think you would do something inappropriate like what you think I meant,” I said. “I meant what happened? You had to do more than just catch her gaze across the room.”

"Well it was a loaded question," I grumbled, mostly to myself. Then I sighed, running a hand through my hair. "I hadn't talked to anyone yet that night except Sergei, and I saw her. She stood out, I thought she was the most beautiful woman in the room. So I went over and asked her to dance. We talked a lot, even if it made my head hurt. She's offered to help me improve my D'Angeline."

“That’s very kind of her,” I said truthfully. I watched Fydor as he spoke, gods help me, he really did like this girl. “She’s the Sovereign Duchesse of Eisande, yes?”

"Yes," I confirmed, the names of the sovereigns having been pounded in my head before we left. "Though we didn't speak of it. In fact, we didn't use titles at all."

“And you wish to court her?” I asked. “Are you certain? Certain that it’s not just the… novelty of her?”

If it was anyone else, my pride would have bristled at such a question. "Alexei, I kept pinching myself because she was just so perfect. I want to court her," I said completely earnest.

“Alright,” I said, smiling and nodding. “You have my leave to do as you wish. As far as courting that is.” I chuckled. “No getting married before I do.”

I laughed, relieved that he believed I was serious, that he wasn't going to try to talk me out of it. "Thank you brother. And I promise, no marrying before you get around to it."

"I was wondering if you could help me with that. I'm supposed to go see her in a few days. Should I go talk to her father first?" I hadn't been seriously interested in a girl before, they were all after my older brothers. I didn't want to step on any toes.

“No, if all you are wanting is to court her then you will be fine without speaking to her father,” I assured him. “As for courting her, just be yourself Fydor, she obviously likes you. Be honest and don’t make any promises or hope for too much too soon. Find out what she likes, what interests her.”

If 'all I want to do is court her', I don't have to speak with her family? That was a change.
"How did you and her Majesty... hit it off?" I asked, hoping to draw inspiration.

I chuckled. “Well, that’s a story I’m not sure you’re old enough for,” I said, grinning. “But, we started out talking politics and then we went to dinner.”

Not old enough for! Bah!
"Oh, do you know any good restaurants in the City then?" I asked, willing to put up with his jibes if it meant winning Lessa over.

“We went to Désir, but there are quite a few nice places. Does she seem the type to like something fancy and dazzling, or something more quiet?” I asked.

"Definitely more quiet," I replied. I knew more than enough about Lessa to know that much. "Then I can dazzle her with my oozing charm without being upstaged." I grinned, probably looking like an absolute rascal.

Laughing, I shook my head slightly. “Yes, I know how easily you could be outshined by the décor of a restaurant,” I said, grinning. “There’s a very nice Aragonian restaurant if that interests you.”

"Mmm, that could be nice. Especially if it's a quieter place." I was still grinning, but taking this very seriously. "What's it called? And more importantly, where is it?"

“Casa Abuelita,” I answered. “It’s in the Temple District, a nicer area but not the fanciest.”
