Well..." I began. "My mother was a Gentian adept, and her mother as well, but I was fostered at Cereus House after she...died..." I bit my lip, I had ceased mourning for her ages ago, but talking about it still evoked a measure of pain. "I saw Naamah one night while the others slept. She spoke to me, and I think I was sick for awhile after that..." That night, I could remember as if it had happened the day before, and I had a feeling that it would always be so. "I didn't really like living at Cereus..." I admitted. "I do not know why no one thought to bring me to Gentian right away."

I smiled at first, though my face quickly grew serious as she elaborated on her journey here. Even with the few details she gave me, it was a serious matter. I nodded accordingly, squeezing her hand softly at the mention of a death. I could relate more than she might think, but I didn't want to indulge in those thoughts. No one ever does.
I let my eyes sparkle a little bit in the light at the mention of Naamah in her dreams. Mine always seemed to haunt me, so it was nice to hear about pleasant visitors in one's sleep.
"Well, maybe they hoped you might be different, perhaps they'd like to break the mold. But then again, the mold was maid for a reason.

I giggled. "You make it sound like I'm a candle!" Well, it was an apt comparison. "I do not know if the gods would seek to discard such a good mold after keeping it for two generations,"
My expression turned gravely serious. "Vincent, you must not tell anyone what I have told you, please?" I pressed a finger to his lips. I had shared this incident with only a few people, the others at Gentian already thought I was a little odd. "But I think that we will have to tell the others what happened at the temple, the Dowayne must know, at least."

I nodded quietly at her plea. "I won't tell a soul. Naamah's Promise. As for that just now, I wouldn't think to much of it. Answer truthfully if asked, but you need not explain undo events." I squeezed her hand one more time. "I would take the time to figure out what that might have been before you try to explain it to someone else, don't you think?"

I could have kissed him right there, but the giggling priestesses were probably still keeping an eye on us, so I just squeezed his hand. "Thank you, Vincent, I think that I will think about it some more, but...I think I know what I saw...and heard...it's hard to mistake the beating of wings, unless a dove was released before I fell. Did you notice anything?"

"No." I said simply. I'd thought she was still looking at the clouds, for I knew that is where my head was: In the clouds. "Sorry." I said again. We walked, making our way past the last of the priesthood, crossing the gates and walking back to the city proper. "But if I did, I would tell you."

I nodded. "I don't think that our house has a reputation for producing liars," I grinned. "No one would trust us, if that were the case." I didn't think that the sound I had heard came from a dove's wings, anyways.

I nodded, agreeing with her as she spoke initally. I raised my eyebrow though at her last comment, not quite following, and hoping she might elaborate a little more. We turned a corner onto one of the main roads, busy with evening traffic as we started the accent to mount nuit.

I was fortunate in that my vision had cleared and my limbs were functioning properly, or I don't think I could have made the climb, even with Vincent there beside me.
I caught his raised eybrow at my comments. "I wonder if the adepts find that it is hard to tell the truth, sometimes. Do you think they might lie just to please their patrons?" I couldn't help but wonder if such a thing would ever happen to me.

"I could not say at this point." I looked at her softly. "I suppose that is one of the things we'll learn as we spend more time within their walls." We walked slowly, being passed by horse drawn carriages climing faster then us, as well as a couple sparse patrons, no doubt, coming down, with a look of dazed happiness upon their face.
"I imagine it would determine what type of patron you might attract though. But, as for us, at least in our house, it would go against canon."

I jumped at the sight of the carriages, tightly gripping Vincent's arm for a brief moment before realizing that I was probably crushing him. "I'm sorry!" I exclaimed. "I...They startled me." I wasn't used to travelling so slowly while the carriages easily made their way up Mont Nuit.
I took a deep breath, trying to convince myself that nothing was going to run into us. "Well, I guess we shall just have to wait and see, and worry about patrons when we actually start receiving them. We still have a few more years to go, right?"

I nodded quietly. "It seems so." I looked at her a moment questionally before turning back to the street. "Are you anxious at all?" I asked it as blandly as I could, so as not to infer any sort of answer.

"Anxious?" I asked, staring down the street. "Oh, no, it's just that the carriages move so fast when we're moving so slow, and it startled me, that's all."

I chuckled a little. "Not that." I started, leaning to whisper, "Are you anxious for your debute I mean?" I posed the question lightly.

"Oh!" I coloured a little. "Well, I...I don't really think about it very much..." I still had a few years left to think about it, after all. "Are you nervous, Vincent?"

"I guess not so much. But I would think every adept carries some anxiety about that time. It is after all, our defining moment, isn't it?" I posed. It was true. One can only read books, take lessons, and learn everything there is about Naamah's arts second hand. Yet, one does not know themselves fully until such a time as they can test themselves.

I nodded. "I suppose that is true, but I am more worried about the pain myself, they can only teach us so much." As much as I would hope for a gentle partner, one could not choose one's patrons--especially if my virginity was to be auctioned. "I try not to think about it," I repeated, keeping my eyes focused on the path ahead.

"Well, I'm sure if you talked to the Dowayne," I thought for a moment on the topic, seeing as it was slightly ironic, "...he might be more aware of what to choose for a first patron then." I'd been watching the road, but I looked at her then, "right?"

I nodded, that suggestion sounded reasonable. "I think that perhaps I should, but what happens if they put it to an auction?" The thought of an auction left a bad taste in my mouth, and I shuddered. "I guess I should trust that the Dowayne will arrange something, right? Especially if I bring my concerns to him." The thought was more reassuring, but I also found that it was easier to deal with when I wasn't thinking about it.

"Well, I think that's to specific to worry about then in the future. I doubt though that you would get very uncaring people coming to Gentian house." We had reached the top of the hill already, quite surprising to me. "From what I heard, people who come to Gentain are often at their most vulnerable points in their lives." I looked back to the sky, "What do you think?"

I nodded. "I think that the same thing could be said for Balm House, I wonder if our houses have any sort of arrangement, like what Mandrake and Valerian have?" He was right, however, and that thought dispelled most of the fear that I felt. Patrons that frequented Gentian House were not like those that went to Valerian.
The moment we reached the top of the hill, I didn't bother disguising the relief I felt--it seemed to me like we had been travelling for the past hour. "I think that I will be very glad to be home after what happened at the Temple," I said, looking down at my sore feet and wiggling my toes just to make sure that they still moved.

I found myself starting to stray on that comment. I wonder if we did have such an agreement with Balm. Often, one would think that might be a very useful arrangement. I should ask Octavier if such a thing could be instituted.
I didn't realize I was day dreaming until after a silence befell us, as Catherine stopped speaking. I looked at her quickly, then looked back, not aware of what she said. I blushed a little saying ,"Right." quickly, hoping it would appease her. I don't know why I felt I needed to, but I did.

I thought his comment was a little abrupt, but it was a small comfort. "Right," I agreed, watching as Gentian House came into view. "I hope I did not miss anything important." Perhaps Vincent could remain in the opium rooms all day, I, on the other hand, seldom had time to do much else than study, memorize, prepare...
And sit under that old tree all day...

"So, I assume we'll have to part ways for now, but..." I looked around a bit. "I don't think this will be the last time we meet, right?" I asked curiously. If nothing else, I'd set myself up some motivation to associate with my house mates. It would be good for me, I thought.

I had assumed we would meet again, so I was a little surprised by his question. "Of course, silly!" I exclaimed. "We live in the same House, how could we not see each other again?" I suppose I should have recalled that I had only seen him outside of Gentian, but at the moment, all I could think about was that I had made a new friend.

I giggled. "I was not aware of the fact that thinking too much is a bad thing! They do it in Siovale all the time!" I had never been to Siovale, but, like most D'Angelines, I had heard my share of stories.

"Ah, yes well, no one notices there absent mindedness like they might mine." I said, playing with my hair a bit subconsciously. They say women do such a thing when they are attracted to men, but I think I did it just cause I was nervous.
