“Perhaps someday you might stop by my salon and I could show you some of my paintings,” I suggested.

You mean tonight? "That would be lovely," I said, smiling. "I'm sure they are all wonderful."

“You’re very good for my pride, and you haven’t even seen them,” I said with a chuckle. “Perhaps when you do see them I’ll be able to convince you to sit for me for a formal painting.”

"Someday, perhaps," I said. "You'll have to give me a lot of calming oil."

“I’ll remember that,” I said, grinning and then stopping in front of a stall offering jewelry.
“I think jewelry always looks more sensual at night, more enticing.”

The gems and metals glimmered and shone in the firelight and I nodded. "They do," I agreed. "I love how they shine in the firelight."

“Firelight does seem to bring out a different side of things,” I agreed, smiling. “Far more so than candles and lamps even.”

"Oh, but candles themselves can be lovely," I said. "They come in all shapes, colors and patterns, and some even are flavored."

“True. Perhaps I’m just more accustomed to candles and lanterns. A large fire seems more exotic,” I replied.

I nodded in agreement. I reached out fleetingly to touch an amber bracelet. "I like that one."

I looked at the piece she indicated. “Oh, that is lovely. The color suits you very well,” I said, smiling.

"Thank you," I said. I certainly couldn't afford it, not right now anyway. "Shall we move on?"

“Certainly,” I said, giving a smile and nod to the proprietor and then leading Merav away at a leisurely pace.

As we strolled, I asked, "What was the most interesting marque you ever did?"

“There was a Servant of Namaah who was half Ch’n and the man who held her marque wanted a design that promoted that. Her marque was a dragon from a Ch’n myth rising up a cloud along her spine,” I answered, smiling. “It was fascinating work.”

"How exotic," I breathed. "Did it take a long time?"

“She was very popular, so she had plenty of patron gifts to spend, but she had a very low tolerance for pain so it took over three years to complete,” I told Merav.

"Poor girl," I said sympathetically.
We passed under a sign that read "Salon Kachine," and I looked at him. "This is your store?"

“It is,” I said, smiling. “My studio is on the bottom floor and I live on the top floor. Would you like to see a tour?”
