His hand moved over my hair, and I blushed a little. "I'm just glad you returned. I was so relieved when I received your letter telling me so." Not wanting to give into temptation, I started us walking again.

Damn you, Landis, I thought to myself wryly though I only walked with her and smiled, keeping my scorn of my actions to myself. I'd been stupid to forget her habits. "I'm glad I decided to write as well," I told her sincerely. "I almost wasn't sure if you're remember."

"Of course I remembered." I told him. I prayed for you every night, just like I said I would. I smiled, and added, "You did make quite the impression you know?"

"Did I? A good or bad one?" I asked, joking for a moment as I forgot my fears while I'd been away- that when I'd gotten home I'd have only ghosts to remember me. Still, I reminded myself, this was not the Mercy who'd left my home all of those years ago- we'd both grown in that time, and I was still trying to find what exactly our standing was with one another.

"If you have to ask..." I said, teasing him with a grin. I hadn't been this light-hearted in ages, but I was ecstatic to see him again. I always felt that it had been he and mother that actually understood me during my teen years. His letters had always been highly anticipated. "But really Landis, how could you make a bad impression?"

"Just because I didn't at the time doesn't mean it's seen the same way now," I told her innocently, grinning with mirth. "After all, I'm only a simple, rustic d'Angeline with no sense of boundaries or tact; not everyone enjoys that."

"Well I for one enjoy it. Courtiers who say one thing and mean something different get very tiring after a while," I replied with a soft smile. "You're a breath of fresh air." I looked about us as we wandered. "So where are we headed now?"

"I'm not exactly sure," I told her with a laugh. "You started walking and I just went with you, I guess. There's always something to see in the City though. I am learning that much about it."
After a moment I added more quietly. "I really did miss you, you know. Your letters helped keep me sane."

I chuckled. "Don't tell me we're lost," I jested.
At his quieter comment, I grew more serious. "I'm just glad I could help," I replied softly, intimately. "I was so afraid that one day the letters would stop, and I'd never hear from you again."

"We know we're in the City, as long as we don't go outside any large walls we can't be too lost," I told her with a laugh, then smiled and stroked her hand again. "You were a great help, and I did come back alright. There's no need to worry anymore, I promise." Taking the hand I stroked I lightly kissed the back, then replaced it on my arm. "And we're both living, and happy for the moment and able to speak again. We should celebrate."

"Aren't we already?" I asked with a smile. My cheeks were a bit pink from his kiss, but I didn't truly mind. It was a sweet gesture to thank me. "We're exploring a beautiful city with each other. Or were you thinking of something else?"

"Perhaps some lunch, if we find somewhere interesting?" I suggested playfully.

"I'm sure I would agreeable to such a thing," I said with a smile at his exuberant attitude. "You're not hungry already are you?" I teased.

"No, not yet," I replied, my smile matching his. We passed by a street vendor with a colourful display of masques. "Look at that one," I said to Landis, pointing to a masque depicting a monkey.

"Very interesting," I agreed, then pointed out a shinier moon-faced mask close to it. "That one's just lovely though."

"I pick a silly one, and you immediately show me beauty," I said with a smile, reaching out to run a finger along the edge of the masque he had chosen. It was indeed lovely. "Do you have many masqued balls here?" I asked, wondering if I would ever have need of one. If not, I might pick out one to send home to Isabell.

"There's a few, though I haven't heard specifically of any coming soon," I told her honestly. "The biggest masquerade ball is, of course, the Midwinter Masque; I missed it this year, but perhaps I'll come back and go once it comes again. It's supposed to be a lovely, spectacular, magical sight."

"I shall keep this stall in mind then, should I ever need one. I doubt I'll be here till Midwinter," I replied. Not unless something keeps me here. "In the mean time, do you see any that my sister might like? Since you have an eye for spotting such gems." The moon masque was lovely, but not quite right for her.

"Hmm," I pondered, looking over the arrangement of things, then pulled a violet and emerald butterfly masque from where it had been hiding in the back and showed it to her. "Something more like this, perhaps?"

"Oh that's perfect!" I exclaimed with a smile. "She loves purple. Did I tell you that she went through a phase where every gown she had was purple?"

"I don't remember it specifically, but if I picked this masque you probably did and I'm just having a mental lapse," I told her, laughing cheerfully. "I must be getting old."

"You are getting dangerously close to thirty," I teased as I indicated to the stall keeper to wrap the masque up.

A variety of unpleasant thoughts ran through my head at her words, all directed at myself being eventually old and with nothing to show for it, but I covered with a bright smile. "Some people only get better with age- like you, for example, only lovelier since the last time we spoke. I'll just have to hope for the same luck."

"Landis, you look better too. The added years suit you, make you more... dignified?" I said, searching for a good description. The stall keep handed over a bag, and paid him from the small purse on my belt.

"Unfortunately, my nature probably belies the appearance," I told her cheerfully. "I'd even venture the only time I seemed truly dignified was when I was sad and solemn."

"I was trying to be complimentary," I replied with a teasing smile. "Not trying to say you looked depressed all the time." I took the bag and we continued down the street.

"Oh, I know- I was only trying to see if I could playfully fluster you," I replied back innocently and chucking as i looked down the street. "Did it work?"

"You were always good at flustering me," I told him with a smile though I didn't meet his gaze. I didn't know what emotions were in my eyes.

"All part of the plan to make myself memorable and catch your attention," I assured her slyly, glancing at her out of the corner of my eye. "You were quite flustering too, I can assure you of that."
