I laughed with him, shaking my head. "I don't know. Begging is always nice, after all..." I grinned as we walked, stepping gingerly over the loose stones that lay in the path.

"Please Miri," I begged, looking at her with eyes wide and lashes fluttering. "Please say you'll dance with me."

I laughed harder, shaking my head at him. "Oh gods, only if you promise never to do that again." I grinned up at him, mirth lightening my face. "Just call on me when you're ready."

"I promise," I said with a grin.
We'd reached the end of the path and I could see the carriage nearby. I stopped and turned to face her. "Thank you for not dismissing my request immediately."

I stopped as he did, a natural gesture, and nodded softly as I looked up at him. "Thank you, as well, for understanding that I need time."

"Of course," I said, smiling. "There is no pressure, no rush from me. I am hoping to get the chance to spend the rest of my life with you Miri and with the gods grace that will be a long, long time."

There were no expectations in his eyes, no judgements, nothing but patience. I was grateful to him for it in more ways than just one, and I let my arm drop down, catching his hand with my own. "I hope so," I replied quietly, my mouth holding an echo of a smile.
I looked at him for a moment before dropping my gaze, glancing over to the carriage. "I should probably head home," I said. There was much to be said still, but I needed time to gather myself.

"Would you like the time to be alone?" I asked, not pressuring her either way. "My carriage can take you home if you'd like."

"No," I replied, smiling. "I'll need some later, but I'd like to stay in your company a little longer, if that's alright."

"It's more than alright," I said with a smile, taking her hand and leading her to the carriage. Her fingers were warm and soft and felt so good against mine.

It was nice seeing him smile so much, and I returned it as I stepped up in the carriage, smoothing my cobalt skirts below me as I sat. "This isn't how I imagined the night going," I admitted with a smile that bloomed more, my eyes shining warmly in the dim light.

I followed her into the carriage and settled beside her.
"How did you imagine the night going?" I asked curiously as the carriage began to move again.

"Laughter and joking, stories..." I trailed off, though I was smiling. "Not with a question of courtship."

"Are you disappointed?" I asked, a little teasing and a little serious.

"So terribly so," I said, trying to lighten the mood with a jest. I smiled at him and reached over, gingerly taking his hand with my own.

"Oh good," I said, smiling and squeezing her hand. "I'd hate for you to get any more spoiled."

I laughed and squeezed his hand back. "You're just lucky I don't have room to jab you in the ribs," I teased, my eyes sparkling in mirth. "Besides, I'm not spoiled. Just... Lucky."

"Oh yes, not spoiled at all." Chuckling, I drew her closer and settled my arm around her. "And I'm neither funny nor handsome, just lucky."

"Precisely," I agreed, grinning up at him as I leaned into his side. The night air was cool still and my arms were bare; I hadn't paid much attention to the chill in all that had happened, but the warmth of his body reminded me. I pressed a little more, silently enjoying the night. "I'm so glad summer is coming. I miss the warm nights." I smiled, looking out his window as the City slowly rolled by. From what I recognized, I didn't think my townhome was too far away, but then again the night had ways of playing tricks on your eyes.

"Summer is very nice," I agreed, leaning my head against hers. "I'm sure I'll be burdened with another natal fete."

The gesture of his head laying against mine was natural, and for a moment I had memories of our childhood, laughing and playing together. It was enough to make me smile, hoping the future would be as happy as my past was.
"Oh, that's right," I said, my voice a mixture of happiness and contentment. "You'll be 27 this year, won't you?"

"That you are," I said with a teasing smile. "We should do something to celebrate it, though. Have you done anything interesting the past few years?"

"There was a fete last year, at the Palace," I said. "It was a big to-do."
The carriage turned and began to slow in front of Miri's home. "I'd rather spend the day with you this year though if I have the choice."

"I'm sure we could arrange something," I said, smiling. I recognized where we were immediately and was contradictorily both saddened and glad to see my townhome; I was having a nice time, but I had much to think about, to sort through.
As the carriage rolled to a stop before my door, I gave a soft sigh, straightening myself from him. "Home again," I said, my hand taking his and squeezing it softly.

"Unfortunately," I said with a grin. "Shall I walk you to the door or would it be too much a temptation for you to invite me inside?"

I narrowed an eye at him. "I'm pretty sure I could resist," I said idly, though a touch of tease was in my voice. The door was opened to the carriage and I stood, my skirts lifted a touch as I made my way out of his carriage.

Could I?
I stepped out of the carriage behind her and took her arm. "You are a strong woman," I said as I led her up the walk.

I laughed as we walked forward to my door. The moon had broke from a cloud, speckling the land with dim light. "I've had years of practice resisting your charms," I said as we neared my door. I turned and faced him, smiling. "Even if you didn't realize that you were being charming."

"Then perhaps it's time you quit resisting and saw what that was like," I said with a teasing grin and wink.
We stopped in front of her door. "Safely home, my lady."
