"I am certain you are the center of many mysterious and envy fueled rumors," I told her, smiling.

Smiling in return, flattered, I replied, "Well, I haven't heard them." We were about halfway to the hill where the Houses rested and I felt myself slowing just slightly, not eager to return so quickly.

"I've heard a few," I commented, smiling mysteriously. "But then I hear everything."

"We've already determined that," I teased, gently stroking his arm. "But please don't tell me what they say. I may have the urge to dispel the image and that would defeat the purpose, wouldn't it? What do you hear of yourself?"

"That I am far too handsome, talented and intelligent to be an adept. That the Dowayne should just step aside and let me take over," I replied, managing to sound serious and keep a straight face.

"Well, no one said the masses were always the best informed," I joked dryly. "But too intelligent for Bryony? There can't be any such thing."

"That's what they say," I said, sighing dramatically as if having to bear the burden of my intelligence.

"I'm sure you'll find some way to get by, even with the weight of your brain bowing your shoulders," I told him in jesting sympathy.

"I've managed thus far," I replied, giving in to a smile and chuckle. "What are you wearing to the fete?"

"It's a suprise," I told him slyly. "Something I just happen to have in my closet."

"Fine," I said, affecting a hurt demeanor. "I won't tell you what I'm wearing either."

"I like suprises," I replied, serenely smiling. "I thought you did as well." In what could be considered an apology I kissed his cheek lightly, but mostly I felt a little like teasing.

"Too much time in Bryony, I like information," I said, smiling. "Just as well, now I won't think of you in clothing, I'll just picture you without."

"Well, it's too bad I can't attend in such a state, for it's so comfortable," I mused.

Looking over at her, I furrowed my brow. "Now I'm torn between trying to convince you to attend that way and trying to figure out how to fight off all the others who would swarm you."

"I can fight off my own people swarm me," I reminded him, cocking my head sideways. "If I thought you would I'd challenge you to a sparring match so I could prove it."

"I don't mind sparring, though I am fairly certain you'll win," I told her. "You just have to let me impress you with my knife skills afterward so I still feel like a big, burly man."

"We'll see," I replied. "One of the other female adepts I know at Dahlia is also dagger-trained and I've watched her from time to time. We do tumbling together on occasion."

More than three-quarters of the way home, we had com upon a semi-secluded turn in g the road and I took the opportunity to move my lips to hers and kiss her.

Smiling, I wrapped my arms around his neck and leaned against him, kissing him in return with a good deal of affection. "Was that a goodnight kiss?" I asked his softly, still smiling. "Tired of walking with me?"
