I followed his lead almost unconciously. "I have six more inches to go." I made a face. "And then another two years. So, all told, I'll be lucky to have no obligations to Eglantine in about three years."

"Is that why you don't buy any of those dresses? So all your money can go to your marque?" I asked her. She was so beautiful and well poised, it was hard to believe she was so young. I had heard some awful stories about the Night Court, I am sure all those in distant lands had. I refused to believe them though, as I did with most things until I had knowledge of my own about them.

I looked down. "Its the same with all adepts. I just have extra incentive." I met his eyes again, refusing to be ashamed of my decision. "Though a regular adept can leave immediately after they finish their marque, I will stay for an extra two years. It was the price for receiving a specialized marque, in honor of my parents."

"It is good that you make that sacrifice for your family name, there is honor in such acts," I told her.
I looked around us, realizing we had been walking for quite awhile.
"Would you do me the honor of joining me for a drink. I find I am suddenly very thirsty," I said, smiling.

I smiled at his kind words, and then truly smiled at his offer. "Thank you. If we go another half block, we shall be at the Cockerel, which is the tavern I mentioned."

"Lead the way," I said, pleased at her smile.
I looked around, noting the state of the buildings around us.
"Even the disreputable part of your City is beautiful," I observed.

I laughed softly at that and sighed happily. "I must agree."
And then I led him into the Cockerel, and there was a great increase in noise, and a great descrease of light. Though it was early, the place was still full, and I took Alexei by the hand, leading him to an empty bench that I cleared with a sensuous smile. The innkeeper bustled over, clearing his way through the crowd mostly through right of weight.
