I handed the clerk the money for the book, smiling as he tried not to appear to be eavesdropping on our conversations.
"Hmmm, lucky for you I am not a cruel person or I would insist on more ribbon shopping. Make you go with me while I chose a new set for every dress I owned," I said, winking at the clerk as he handed me the wrapped book.
I stepped out of the way so Janyx could pay for his books.
"Perhaps we could go shoe shopping? Or for some gloves? Or perhaps some fabric and thread for new pillows?" I said, trying hard to appear even close to serious and failing miserably.

I counted out the coins necessary for my purchase and groaned in mock agony. "Oh Bright Eyes, are you sure you're in the right House? I can just see you as a Mandrake changeling." The clerk gave me a sympathetic smile and handed me my books.
"Next you're going to say I should braid your hair and gossip about patrons together. I have some pride Caraf, just a little, please don't make me beg for mercy."

"Ha!, as if I'd ever trust you with my hair," I said, laughing.
I laid the book on top of his. "Just return it when you're finished," I said. "It seems like a small enough price to pay for having been able to enjoy your company today."

I made another face at her and tugged on a lock of hair.
"I wouldn't botch it that badly, I'm quite good with hair, really."
I hefted the stack of books to my hip and nimbly offered her my arm. "Since you've enjoyed my company so much, where to now, Lady Fair?"

I took his arm and looked up at the sky as we exited the bookstore.
"I think it's time for me to make my back to the House. I have to speak to the Dowayne about one of the students in my morning class," I told him.

"As you will, Bright Eyes. I still have nothing to do this afternoon, so I suppose I'll start on this book, brood a little, and think of ways to avoid the Duchesse."
We started retracing our steps back toward the Night Court and Heliotrope. I had enjoyed her company too, but didn't think I'd tell her.

As we approached Heliotrope I took my wrapped horses back and smiled.
"I really did enjoy the afternoon, thank you again. I hope the ribbon store wasn't too horrible," I said with a smile. "If you do decide to visit Gentian, I will be happy to use my inside connections to help you in any way you might like."
I leaned in and kissed his cheek before spinning and heading towards the Dowayne's rooms.
"Enjoy the book!," I called over my shoulder, laughing.
