I watched their brief interaction with a cordial smile then nodded at Juliette, stepping away from her side to regard the wares of Monsieur Rousseau’s boutique. It was passing strange to wander about the boutique peacefully, I glanced up from the intricately embroider white, low neckline bodice before me to catch Juliette’s eye.
“It is wonderfully quiet in here, allows one to actually consider a purchase without a persistent merchant yapping in one’s ear.” I chuckled in good-nature then held up the bodice so that my companion could view it.
“What do you think of this one? I think with the proper tucking of my bosom, I could gain a few extra ducats serving the drunkards at the tavern where I work. My father or brother would naught approve, I think. Do you have any siblings, Juliette?”
A scowl as large as Siovale itself would have spread across my fathers face had he been present for my comment. My brother would have spoken a quip about my choice of garments but alas, they were not here and it was all the more reason to buy the bodice.

She was so blasé about wearing such garb to earn tips that I curbed my frown. She lived in the real world, more than I, where money was a truly precious commodity. I worried about money, but I always knew that if an emergency came up, it would be available.
"I have a younger brother," I replied simply. "As for the bodice, I would think a darker colour would be more practical. Along with setting off your skin more."

I regarded the garment with a skeptic eye though yielded to Juliette’s judgment, exchanging out the white bodice for one dyed a deep shade of indigo. I suspected that it would be more costly than the white bodice but well worth the price, if it added coin to my purse to maintain a roof over my head and food in my belly.
There was naught anyone to whom I could lean on in this city, save for me, if times became harsh. Money, sadly, was never far from my mind. I carefully pulled the bodice to rest in the crook of my left arm and wandered back towards my companion, setting aside my dreary thoughts.
“A younger brother, you say. I’ve no doubt that he is as handsome, as you are beautiful.” I truthfully commented. “I have an older brother…no other siblings aside from him.”

"I suppose he is, though you have to get past the teenage angst to see it." I said with a bemused look for her compliment. I looked through the selection of short capes, waiting for something to catch my eye. Gods I was bad at shopping for myself. "What does your brother do?"

Amused by the expression upon her face, stemming from my comment, I answered the question through a light smile.
“My brother provides a myriad of services to the neighboring manors back home, when not in pursuit of a wife or minding tasks that my father has requested of him to perform before the season is out.”
I wandered about the boutique once again though found nothing more that I could purchase without putting myself in a good amount of debt so, I rejoined Juliette to point out a violet cape that I thought would suit her.

Rousseau finally appeared from the back to usher Odette of to the change rooms. I fingered the cape she had pointed out, listening to his friendly chatter.
"Oh yes, a wonderful choice. You would like to try it on my dear? It's just this way," he offered with a sweep of his hand. I bit back a chuckle.

“I’d like that, Monsieur Rousseau.” He was more kindly in service than the last shop owner, so I willing followed his direction into one of the rooms. Truly I hoped that the bodice would flatter my form in all the right ways, it would be such a disappointment if it were the opposite.

After seeing Odette was properly set up in the back, Rousseau came back to check up on me.
"Jeanne sent you out shopping, didn't she?" He asked with a chuckle.
"How did you know?" I asked with an ironic smile. "How is Carla?"
"Oh, she's fine. Still seeing that smith," he replied, going about and pulling an outfit together. "I keep hoping for grandchildren, but he needs to get a move on and ask for her hand for that to happen."
I laughed at the exasperated affection in his voice. He presented me with the outfit to try on. A violet skirt that would go with the cape Odette had suggested, with a dark grey bodice. "Thank you sir. You're an angel."
"Oh don't you sir me, your grace," he teased as we headed back to the change rooms.

When I was left alone to my own devices, I gave one last look at the garment held in my hands to study the fine stitching of the seams before making a change to my attire. It took a little time in the making but I was happy with the results.
Running both hands down the gentle curves in my sides, I stepped closer to the mirror perched in the room to admire my reflection a bit, my eyes casting here or there to check the fitting of the bodice.
While there were many a women in the land that were more full in the bust than myself, I thought I had done the garment a great service in filling it out properly, a smile peered back at me from the mirror at that.
Content, I noted the way that the garment set to my form, it was perfect in my eye, pooling my breasts together in a most enticing manner that left a gentle swell of flesh that I approved of.
I murmured lowly to myself, a prayer of sorts, before parting from the room to bare the comments of Rousseau and Juliette.

Odette came out, showing quite the beguiling cleavage. "That will certainly get you tips," I told her with a smile. "It's a wonderful colour on you."

“Thank you, Juliette.” Her smile was returned in kind and I tipped a hand towards the garments that she desired to try on. “Would you show me your change of clothing? I imagine that you shall look equally wonderful, if not amazing, in that colour… I suspect. I’m going to free myself of this garment before I burst.” I chuckled then disappeared back inside my room to change.

I smiled at her enthusiasm, then went into the other change room to try on the outfit. My own gown was a simple affair, and I was dressed again in no time, coming out of the small room to look in a mirror and receive comments.

With the bodice liberated from my being, I laid it over one arm then stepped unceremoniously out of the changing room to smile at Juliette, keeping myself out of the mirror’s grace whilst I commented on the gown.
“A fair gown, for a fair lady,” I continued to smile then added, “Truly you look beautiful in that colour. What say you, Monsieur Rousseau?” I spied him out from the corner of my vision, moving closer to offer his word on the gown.

He laughed. "I picked it out, so I'm fair biased mademoiselle." He said with a grin.
I smiled. "And I can always trust your taste. It does look wonderful." I replied, smoothing the bodice over my stomach as I gazed in the mirror. "I would never have been able to pick this out for myself. I'll take it," I told him before ducking back into the change room. I didn't want anyone to comment on the fact that I hadn't taken off my gloves, and the ivory fabric didn't exactly go with the new outfit.

Twas passing odd that Juliette was inclined to keep the company of her gloves, mayhap there was somewhat I was missing in the action but I thought it best to not comment upon such, instead turning may attention to Rousseau for the purchase of the bodice draped over my arm.
“And I’ll take this, Monsieru Rousseau.” We separated ourselves from the changing rooms to pass along good and coin.

"Wonderful. If you'll just come this way, I'l tally you both up..." His voice faded as they moved off. I changed efficiently and wasn't far behind them, new clothes over one arm. I smiled. They weren't fete fancy, but they were better than my work clothes.
I paid my bill, and glanced surreptitiously at Odette's to make sure she got a fair price. Rousseau's hand worked deftly, folding and wrapping our purchases into two neat bundles as he chatted away. I thanked him and tucked my parcel under my arm, glancing at Odette to make sure she was ready to go.

As Rousseau completed his task, I took my parcel and secured it under one arm as Juliette had. “You are most polite, Monsieur Rousseau. I look forward to offering you my patronage once again in the future, my thanks for being so pleasant.” I commented in merriment, for indeed he was a pleasant man who had given me a fair price for the bodice. How could I not find joy that?
So it was that our business here was concluded, I smiled appreciatively at Juliette as we departed the boutique. “I have no words to express my gratitude for you showing me this little gem of a shop, Juliette. I will certainly will be back to make more purchases…once I have the coin.”

I smiled. "It was no problem. You just have to know that places like this exist, and you won't settle for bad service," I replied as we wandered down the street once more. "And I must thank you as well. I actually accomplished something this shopping trip, and it was due to your presence."

Soft, good spirited laughter escaped my being as we strolled. “Ah, well I do ought when I can. You are a splendid shopping companion, so it made my day all the better. Thank you.”
There was so much more to see and do still, all in due time though I hoped that such explorations would be agreeable to my person, as this time spent with Juliette had been. I smiled at the prospect then snuggled my parcel more closely to my body to secure it further.
“Mayhap we can do this again, if you like? I’m an easy one to find, when one strikes a fancy to the notion.” Of course if the notion would naught strike her fancy, I would understand. I imagined that there was more to her life than the little I knew of it, time I suspected was a precious thing for her.

"Yes of course, that would be wonderful. Which bar do you work in?" I asked with an open smile. "Oh, and you can find me at the Montegue townhouse," I added.

“Le Poulet Gauche is where I toil for coin for the time being. It is not all together a bad place, once you look past the fights.” I smiled wryly though chased the expression away by chuckling softly then repeating where Juliette could be found.
“Montegue townhouse…” I spied my companions’ gloves thoughtfully for a moment before meeting Juliette’s eyes. “Very well, I look forward to browsing the shops again or saving you from an unexpected perch upon the ground by my doing.” I smiled in amusement then.

I had heard stories of the establishment that gave her employ, and they had been enough to keep me well away. But I chuckled at her jest, willingly diverted from repeating some of the gossip. "A lady in shining armour," I teased. We then came to an intersection where our paths diverged. "I shall see you again Odette. And if you find yourself in need of help, I'm usually easy enough to find."

I smiled at Juliette’s comment then offered a curtsy to bid farewell to my lovely shopping companion when due time came. “My thanks to you, I look forward to our next meeting. Be well…my friend.” I righted my posture with all the grace I could afford before slowly separating myself from her company, to return to my uncomplicated life as a bar matron.
