"You may be surprised how little influence it takes to make a boring, respectable person of someone who doesn't have the true venom for contrariness in her blood," I replied with a smile, signalling that I was finished shopping and waiting for the salesman to total up my purchases. "But then, I don't know her terribly well yet- though I'm sure with our complimentary tastes we'll become fast friends soon enough. Besides, if you and she had such a wonderful relationship I think I should have heard of it by now. I may be from the country, but even there the gossip can teach you a great deal- especially about a powerful person. Someone would have mentioned the relationship out of sheer spite."

"No one knows about it my dear because we're not courting. Its complicated, you wouldn't understand." I moved away from her and found a case with some necklaces in it. Truth be told my first thought was Noelle. But after a moment I knew it didn't feel right. But Coretta, a gift for her....Now that was an idea. "Gossip means nothing." I added. "Its a game played by boring peerage to get they're jollies off without all the fluid." I spied a bracelet of aqua blue gems set in silver.
"Do these match my eyes?" I asked holding up the filigree bracelet.

"Gossip is only without value to someone who doesn't know how to read it," I disagreed calmly, then cast my eyes at the bracelet and raised a brow. "Nearly, though isn't it a bit feminine for you, my lord, or is there something I should know about your true appreciation for gowns?"

I raised a brow and gave a smile. "Wouldn't you like to know." I said turning back to the case.
"Gossip may have value with hidden truths," I began eyeing the tag on the bracelet and retriving the appropriate amount of funds to buy it. "But it lacks the moral delicacies of a good person in my opinion." I handed the amount to the shop keep's assistant, a young girl no more then twelve. She handed the money to what looked like her mother behind the counter and began work to choose a box and wrap it.

"A good person is, in the end, defined by their success; if you come out better than you went in, you will be seen as good," I replied simply, for I knew it was the truth in an undeniable fashion. "Even as history is written by the victors, so to is culture dictated by those willing to brave it and find their advantages within such a terrain."
So, it seemed infatuation had completely removed the man's wry look at the world- who'd have thought someone callous enough to drunkenly grope was now going to spout moral platitudes at me concerning the nature of telling the truth to the masses? What they did with it after that was their own problem.

"Perhaps if you are fickle enough to believe your own words Lady Liselle." I said taking back the box, the girl young gave me a cute smile that made me think she found me attractive, especially because her cheeks blushed a crimson shade when I smiled back.
"Your description of a good person seems bazar to me, some one that knowingly slanders another for personal gain?" I shrugged and placed the box into my doublet's pocket and turned to her, my back to the door.
"Please make sure to tell Coretta, when you see her, that I was unbelievably rude to you, and left you standing alone to tend to your shopping. She'll love it." I smiled and popped a wry brow.
"It was good to see you again Liselle, I hope I have the pleasure to see you at the fete. Enjoy your day." I bowed deeply still smiling as I turned and departed the store, the little bell the only signal that I had been there.

Laughing lightly I arranged for my own package to be delivered to my house, then let Denis beat his hasty retreat- I believed what life had taught me, and nothing could be more true than that. Really, who was more bizarre? He'd scorned that odd girl in the tavern on her appearance and manner just as much as I had, and now he chastised me on some dandified string of morality?
With a smile to the girl and a whispered word of caution about his predilections for younger-than-appropriate flesh that made her blanch I stepped out- well, slander for the sake of pleasure was more fun than personal gain at the moment, and I didn't need the friendship of such a delusional fop. As for the Dauphine- she was interesting, fun and pretty, and I would make it a point to spend more time with her in the future.
