With the coronation fete coming up, and my virginity still intact, and the waiting period almost over with the coming of spring, it was with a storm cloud over my head that I trudged into Mont Nuit to find a dress for the fete. I was so frustrated that I could have screamed. What was the point? No patron could take me home, Kendrick Deveroix had likely forgotten all about me, and I would never prove to Mama what a success I could be. Angrily, I stomped my feet into the ground as I walked. I knew it was immature of me, but I felt I would explode if I did not.

I'd just left the shop, rather pleased with my purchases for the coronation, when my attention was grabbed by a rather lovely looking adept, walking in my direction in a somewhat military fashion. Intrigued, I beckoned for To-Biko to stand aside, and I leaned against the wall, leaving her safe passage, or so it seemed.

I slowed my gait as I noticed the handsome young man leaning against the wall. He was clearly of mixed blood, and he was looking at me with an amused, or bemused, expression. I blushed as I walked closer to him. "Excuse me my lord," I said apologetically.

"Not at all, not all all," I replied dismissively. I could not resist a jest, and asked "Practicing for the next Illyrian invasion, are we?"

I blushed an even deeper red. "No, my lord," I said. "Haven't you heard, stamping your feet is the most fashionable exercise of the day."

"I've heard no such thing, and you are a terrible liar," I scolded in mock anger. "No, tell me the truth, or I shall send you packing to the wolves of Eire. They would enjoy such fresh flesh as yours, Mistress.....?" I left the sentence in the air, it would be up to her to finish it.

"Avrielle no Valerian, my lord, formerly of Orchis and Eglantine houses," I said. "And who do I have the pleasure of being so scared of?" I said this a touch ironically, because even the thought of anyone ordering me anywhere to do anything was thrilling.

By Asherat, she had been all over the Night Court. An interesting little number. At least she would entertain me, I thought.
"The truth, first, Avrielle no Mont Nuit, and then perhaps I shall reward you with my name," I replied, conjuring years of training to mask my mirth.

I tilted my head at him, before launching into my story. "I was born in Eglantine House, moved to Orchis when I was ten, and almost six months ago, was transferred to Valerian under special circumstances. I have been waiting almost six months for my training to end and my virgin price bought, and the frustration and impatience is driving me up the wall." I smiled ruefully. "I have told the truth, my lord."

"I see that, child. Your impatience is both bewitching and disturbing," I observed calmly. I do not like temperamental women, at least, not overly so and she would need to tone down should she wish to keep my interest. "If I may ask, how old are you?"

His use of the word child irritated me, and his tone was condescending. Just because I was young and a virgin did not make me any less a woman. Plus, he had promised me a name, and so far, hadn't given it. Still, I kept myself under control, I didn't want to scream at him. "Sixteen and a half, my lord."

Good. I smiled more warmly, as I noted her stifled fit. I mattered little to me, in truth. As a Valerian adept, she would have use for patience. Best to cultivate it, sooner than later.
"You are ripe, but not overdue, Avrielle no Valerian. Have patience, the release will be all the better. Take the word of Gillermo Streggazza for it," I added, punctuating that promise with my most devilish smile.

Stregazza! Elua, a diplomat! I dropped immediately into a deep curtsey. "An honor, my lord," I said, before straightening. "I know your words to be true, but I have already had one contract broken before it could be filled. It is a disheartening thing."

Ah, curtseys. They were lovely at court, but in the street, they were as heavy as a brick falling from a roof. I suppressed a chuckle. This very young adept was about to slap me earlier, and at the mention of my name, had dropped to the floor. Tsk, tsk, tsk. Letting nothing of this show, by sheer kindness, I continued the conversation.
"It would indeed be disheartening, but was certainly not your last chance at such a contract," I said affably, in the tone I'd used to address Queen Jazara of Meroe. I eyed her for a moment. Not a displeasing sight, in fact not at all. She would be a pleasant bedcompanion, if her temper could be subdued. "If I may ask, what happened to the contract?"

"The lord left the City without warning," I said. I felt so tired nowadays, usually I was jovial, but the weeks of aimless waiting had taken their toll on me. And now I was taking it out on this man. "He returned to his family home on a private affair."

If she'd presented to him in such as state as she was when I saw her, I could imagine the patron fleeing from the vixen, I thought to myself. The thought of a powerful lordling running from an angry Valerian adept was amusing enough. I allowed it to show in the shape of a smirk.
"And may I ask what state you were in at the time? Do tell me, lovely Avrielle, that you are of more tender inclinations than those you were in 10 minutes ago? For the contrary may have set him, running as thought he'd unleashed the Angra Mainyu himself," I told her, my smile flirtatious and my eyes planted into her feline gaze.

I blushed again as he looked into my eyes. "I had never met him," I said, "and usually I am in a better state than this." I chuckled. "I am told that he was a fearsome man, though, one of our most skilled patrons."

"You must have been disappointed, then," I replied matter-of-factly.
"He is, however, not the only patron in the City of Elua, and a maidenhead is a prized present. I would not be overly concerned if I were you," I added with a kind smile.
"Besides, it is an occasion to further your skills, and therefore to better ensnare your potential patrons," and as I said this, my grin widened, and my eyes put on the mantle of mischief.

I grinned. "Perhaps I should practice now, hone my skills, so I can better ensnare a patron." Immediately, I cast my eyes down, folded my hands in front of me and placed my feet together, the very image of a trembling Valerian. "My lord," I whispered humbly. Peeking up at him, I did my best to hide my smile. I was having a hard time taking myself seriously in this situation, and I did my best not to laugh at myself.

I cocked an eyebrow as she pretended to be a Valerian, obviously unable to maintain the stance. Was this unnatural for her?
"Now is not the place or the time to practice your skills, Avrielle," I told her simply, chuckling a little.
Had she no respect for protocol? I wondered what her Dowayne thought of such a strange combination.

I tilted my head at him as I resumed a normal posture. Perhaps he had never met someone with two contrasting sides to them. Outside of training and future assignation, I was playful, cheerful, and irreverant. But put me close to a man, and my blood raced and I would eagerly submit to anything.
"I know," I replied. "I wasn't seriously showing off." I didn't know how to explain myself to him, but then, I felt no obligation to do so either. Kendrick liked me the way I was, and Idaeus too, and Mordred. This man didn't seem like the Valerian patron type, and in any case, he did not make my blood beat the way Kendrick and Idaeus did, not yet anyway.

My eyes twinkled in amusement. She was feisty as well. Interesting.
"I think you were showing me that you have a sense of humor," I replied. "A rather pleasing quality, if you ask me. There is nothing more dreadful then an individual who cannot take a pleasantry," I smiled earnestly. "And I should know. I meet plenty of those, in my profession."
She was a particular being, this Avrielle, and while I was not a regular patron of Valerian House, at times, my blood called for more powerful encounters. I might ask for her, should such an urge occur.

"Thank you, my lord," I said, giving him a wide smile. I was proud of my mouth, the way the red lips split to reveal straight white teeth. "May I ask what it is you do?" I knew he was a diplomat, of course, but I was always interested in more detail.

"My lord is too kind," I said. "Perhaps someplace not too far from the Clothier's district, if you don't mind? I'm supposed to be looking for a dress, technically."

Ah, clothes, more clothes. I frowned, not at her, but at the fatigue of shopping. At least she hadn't offered to go back in that shop.
"As you please. Women's wishes are my command," I replied with a nod, and a smile that was a little bit evil.

Taking his arm, we began to walk up the street. After a little while, the aroma of chocolate and baking met my nose. "Do you smell that?" I asked him. "It smells delicious."

And indeed, it did. "Will it please you to stop here then?"
To-Biko was following us at a respectful distance, he knew the routine.
