"Will you only marry out of duty?" I asked before I could stop myself… it was a very personal question.

"Mostly that is my concern- unless, of course, they are worth marrying for other reasons as well," I replied, nonplussed at her question. "We Shahrizai are a liberal sort, so marriages are not always the strictly monogamous sort. The problem comes when we marry others and they are not as free-thinking as us."

"That is understandable," I said, glad I hadn't offended her.

The lady was done, so I stepped down, picked up the gown and allowed her to lace it. "Your turn, little sweetling," I told Douleur, motioning my head toward the dais. "And don't worry, I'm not going to ogle you and make you uncomfortable one way or the other- just have a conversation."

Smiling, I slipped from my gown. "I am not uncomfortable undressed in front of others, but thank you," I said as I stepped to the dais. With a slight noise, the seamstress twisted my hair into a thick coil and then tied it into a knot to keep it a bit out of the way, then went about her business.

"Of course not- because I'm well-behaved in public," I teased lightly.

"Only in public?" I asked, teasing in return, as I lifted my arms per the seamstress's orders.

"I am Shahrizai, after all," I replied. "If I'm too well-behaved it would mean something was wrong. They'd come and confiscate all of my toys until they knew I was sane again."

The seamstress's head shot up and she glared at me as I trembled. I blushed and held still.
"Then best you do as are now," I said a little shakily.

Laughing lightly at her reaction I smiled. "Yes, I can see why you may have entranced some of my cousins. I look forward to seeing the waves you make at the fete. It's been so long since I've seen a good family quarrel, or a duel."

"I hope not to be the cause of such a thing," I said, lowering my arms as the seamstress finished. I stepped down and dressed again quickly.

"You are a much kinder person than I, of course," I told her. "We do have to challenge ourselves sometimes though- we don't let anyone else do it, so it must come from within. Like wolves setting a hierarchy."

"If I truly thought something like that would happen, I wouldn't attend," I told her. "I don't want to hurt anyone, I've been the cause of enough of that."

"I'm sorry I brought it up then," I replied. Some people were never equipped to know these things. "I guess, being brought up and knowing it was somewhat expected has jaded me to the facts of it."

"That could be," I said, handing over the dress I had chosen to the seamstress.

My money was soon counted and handed to another girl, who informed me that it should be ready in a week's time. I told her if it wasn't I'd take it out of her skin and then giggled as she gave me a slightly frightened look, telling her I was teasing. Really, some of these people had only water in their blood; they should be pitied and allowed to live their bland, pale lives, which is what I did.

Since the dress was fairly simple and the alterations minor, mostly taking up the hem, I had a little bit of coin left after my transaction was concluded.
"It has been a pleasure to meet you," I said to Sirena. "I should be returning to Valerian soon."

"I understand- and I hope to see you at the fete," I replied with a smile. "Please don't be made nervous by what I said, it was simply speculation.

"Good luck with your performance," I said, smiling. "See you at the fete, I hope."
With a curtsey, I took my leave and went back outside, heading to Valerian.
