“More lack of experience really. One does not ponder blood is warm and that men shat themselves when mortally struck unless they have in fact been in such a situation. We are fortunate really that in our country more of the daggers are verbal as opposed to physical.”

"Fortunate?" I questioned, shaking my head some. Apparently Gadleon hadn't tasted much politics in his life. "I beg to differ -- both are volitile, evil things, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that we are fortunate that we rely more on politics than strength of arms. You could lose your life in an attack if you misstep or are slow enough to be caught off guard, but if you are not constantly wary in politics, your lands could be hauled out from under you and your family scattered, penniless, to the wind before you could think twice."
I paused, looking at him. "And after all that, you'd still likely be dead."

I inclined my head “True, but in broad terms you just end up begging in politics and not dead. Though mayhap some would rather be dead than begging.” And now it was time for me to turn table on him. Thus I shifted verbal gears “So tell me a bit about your family and holdings. I have heard from Julie of course but differing perspectives are often enlightening.”

My suspicious nature was instantly perked, though I did my best to stuff it away, remembering the fact that he was Julies... Whatever it was. Not betrothed. Beloved? Ah, hells. Did it really matter?
"The Deveroix estate is located in Namarre, specializing in fruit as well as a small profit in cattle, lamb and wool." I toned it out to him, not bothering to fluff it out and make it pretty. "We have orchards, and a bit of cattle and sheep to not only bring in supplemental income, but to help graze down the grasses between the tree lines. As for my family," I said, giving a slight shrug, "I have no doubt Julie has already told you quite a bit. She always was more of a talker than I."

I nodded “As I said differing perspectives are often enlightening. We each bring our own views with us. Though it sounds like you have all seasons covered as far as production from the land goes.” I could tell he was still guarded but such was to be expected and I simply went with the flow.

"Generations of practice, what can I say," I responded, giving a smile. "The Deveroix name is old in Terre d'Ange, if not as old as your own."

I nodded “I am sure but one who depends on stereotypes based on a name is a fool or delusional.”

I raised a brow. I sure as hell hoped he wasn't insinuating anything, because nothing that I had just said warranted it. It was a rather blunt statement of him to make. "Some names carry stereotypes that you can't shake," I said. "Its bound to happen."

Now that made me laugh "True, but like I said before I try to avoid it. Not always with success I might add."

I shrugged, watching him with a guarded curiosity. Where Julie was one to trust and love freely, I was more cynical, untrusting. "You can't always succeed at everything, I'm afraid. If you could, I'd have many more holdings and much less heartache."

“True, but you can always at least try” I raised my drink to him and then took a sip. “There is no dishonor in trying and failing but I am afraid there is dishonor in not at least making the attempt. At least in my way of thinking.”

I tsked; was he pulling things I didn't mean out of everything I said, or was he just wording it to try and manipulate me into some sort of irritated state? I wouldn't put it past his kin, and for as much as he claimed individuality, he still was a Shahrizai at the base of it all. "As it is my way as well," I responded a touch dryly. "I hope you don't think me daft enough to not believe it."

“You do not strike me as daft at all. Nor dramatic for that matter and those are characteristics that more would be better off if they had them.”
