"My father started it," I replied, "but he and my mother died when I was three. The business is my inheritance; I have known all my life that I would run it someday, and since I came of age, I have striven to make it better each day."

I didn’t think he had that much to be proud of, and I was correct – it was his father’s work, not his own.
“Your father did well, then.” I said quietly, not expecting he would pick up on the unsaid.

"The business was frozen until I came of age," I explained further; the man was so quick to judge. "What you see: the shop, the stocks, that is all my work."

“Ah.” I replied quietly, though I purposely let surprise show in my gaze. “Then you know the meaning of hard work.”

"Yes," I said. What a cynic this man was! I wondered if he had ever worked a day in his life.

Well that was a useful answer. Rather to keep trying to have a conversation that went nowhere, I simply had a quiet drink, rather nonplussed by the sequence of events.

He had no reply, and I was not interested in taking this any further. Rising from my stool, I said, "It's getting late, and I must be in the shop early tomorrow. Have a good night."

I took one last sip of my glass, and grinned. "You're welcome," I said indifferently.

I blinked. If I thanked him now, I would be conceding to him, but if I didn't, he would assume that I was a total cad. On the other hand, he'd been unquestionably rude and facetious all night, and I owed him nothing. The whiskey burned sour in my gut, and I regretted accepting his drinks. "I appreciate your time," I said, equally as indifferently, before nodding and walking out the door. One thing was for certain: I must write to Anacrasia.
