I smiled at the boy and gave him directions to my house. I then tossed him a shiny fresh ducat and held up another "The key is secreted over the top of the door frame. Use it and inside the door you will find a pair of boots. Bring them and re-lock the door and be fast and this other is yours as well."

The boy headed out, and as he did, I opened the door to the study. “Here, this will be more comfortable while we wait,” I said calmly. I set a stool by the armchair, and as Gadleon made himself comfortable, I sat behind my desk to write some notes. It took just a moment, and I said, still scribbling, “Well, tell me, how fares Camlach, then?”

I made my way in and settled on the stool. The fact I was in only one boot making me limp more than anything else. "I will let you know how the toe does with your new treatment." I offered conversationally and then responded to the later question "I am from Kusheth actually though I have not been home in about three years now."

I chuckled, “Yes, I know you are from Kusheth, as is the remainder of your well known and numerous kin, M’Lord. I figured you had been to Camlach, or at least through, since you speak Skaldi. Was I wrong?”
Three years… that sounded like a long time. I’d been going to see the Baronne every so often, and could not imagine it otherwise.

"Ah" I smiled "I did not even think of that connection to be honest. Where I served I just tend to think of as the boarder. Though yes, it is in Camlach. The area is pleasant if a bit harsh. To be honest though I spent most my time there living in one tent or another thus I do not really think of my time there as in any province."

I smiled, nodding. "And you've never heard my house name before?"
It was an honest question. The estate was on the border, and it was how I had come to be the heir to the Baronne - I supposed then, his station wasn't quite in the same area.

"I must confess I have not sorry." I added in wry tones while I racked my brains for his House name. I was as often as not pretty poor on recalling how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together. Probably why often when intricacies came up I tended to be stuck nodding and smiling a lot.

I nodded, smiling, “It’s no big deal, really. It’s not a very large estate, one way or the other.” I stood, and walked to the door, giving Joelle a silent command. “Will you return to Kusheth, eventually?”

"Probably not to be honest. There is nothing for me there really as I am a third son thus why I earn my living with a sword as opposed to off of estates. It is my lot in life and I long ago accepted it." I watched him cross the room and stretched out the leg that had my sore foot on it. It was feeling better by the moment I should be just fine the next day.

Joelle came in with tea, and I offered him silently to have some as she left the room quietly. "I understand. But don't you have a family there? I'm told the Shahrizai are very close to their kin..." I said, eyebrow arched.

I accepted the tea with a quiet "Thank you" then looked back to the surgeon. "Yes, I come from a family of seven and my Clan is tight as you mentioned. But well I have cousins here and all that. I did not say I would not visit I meant I doubted I would make my home there again. I thought that was what you asked."

“Oh, it was, in fact,” I replied as I handed him the cup. “Several years sounds like a long, a very long time to spend away from home. I go back to Camlach easily once a month,” I said as I served myself.

I sipped the cup and shrugged "I have always been a bit of a loner. Of course most describe me as eccentric." I grinned "You know the polite way of saying as mad as a hatter?"

I chuckled, "Yes, I know that very well. How eccentric, really?"
I couldn't help but think of the last time one of his kin had been in my office - oh gods. I hoped I wouldn't have to bleed him - those were always messy enterprises.

"I like to think I am just quirky and over enthusiastic most days. You know the whole vast and intricate thought processes that no one aside from me really gets?"

I smiled, and nodded. Such things were common, though I replied with an amicable answer that wasn’t quite false. “I understand. I have such convoluted conversations about my work on a very regular basis,” I told him gleefully. “My governess calls me the mad scientist – mostly because I like to stay up all night working,” I explained amusedly. “However, if I explained my work, most would be hard pressed to figure out my mind.”

I nodded and sipped my tea "I reckon we are all that way about our passions. Whatever drives us in various things is so innate and personal that another one experiencing or looking at the same event simply cannot fathom it."

The conversation was interrupted, and he came in with a pair of boots and an extended hand. I waited, to see the interplay between the Shahrizai and the boy – he had grown bolder it seemed, smiling at him with an impudent grin.

I smiled at the lad as he had done well and I actually liked children. I accepted the boots and then dug out two coins for him instead of the promised one and tossed them to him. "Thank you lad that was very well done." A small kindness often repaid its self and I had no reason to withhold this one.

I grinned at his gentle gesture towards the lad, and let the boy out with an affectionate tap on the shoulder. “Well, now that you have your boots, what was that about a lesson in Skaldia?”

I looked down and pulled off my one good boot and discarded it. Soon working on the pair the lad had brought. After I was done testing them on my sore toe I looked up to Siegfried “Einherjar is the term that refers to the noble fallen warriors in the Skladic religion. The Valkyries escort them to Odin’s great hall of Valhalla where they await the final battle of Ragnarok.”

I looked at him a moment, aghast, and after the word had computed in my mind, I let out a hearty laughter. “I think that deserves both ale, and a freebie. Let’s go and have a little something, and you can start your instruction of me from the beginning, how’s that?”

I stood and smiled as the boot did not feel bad at all "Alright, like us I suppose your people start and end with religion. So mayhap we should talk of old one eye first."

"You intrigue me more and more," I said with a smile. I stood, putting on my jacket, and opened the door to let him out. When he had, I locked the door, putting the key in my pocket.
To the assistant, I said, "Joelle, you can close for the day. No, don't bill M'Lord Shahrizai, just reorder some dressings on my account, please. Oh, and do send this note to Violette no Balm, please." I handed her the note soberly as I spoke.
I didn't bother giving orders pertaining to the cleaning of the examination room, that was customary, and stepped out the door, letting my young instructor come first.
