For a moment I was dumbstruck, not being able to find words to label him in a teasing manner without worrying about them being taken awry. Finally I gave up, ceding to him with a graceful bow of my head. "You win this battle, Master Stasbourg, but don't think I'll forget it." I gave him a coy smile as I lifted my head, amused thoroughly.

"I don't think you will, and I am confident that you will win the war," I replied with a chuckle.

I tsked softly, shaking my head in playful disapproval. "Well that makes the challenge no fun. Or was that your intention?" Glancing up at him, I smiled, making sure he knew I wasn't serious.

"Absolutely," I said in mock seriousness. "I live to spoil your fun, Joie."

"I wish you well with it," I said formally, bowing my head slightly to him as I smiled, "For now that I know, I will no longer take what you say with any seriousness."

"At last, someone who understands me," I exclaimed dramatically.

I laughed with his jests, giving up any part of even trying to look serious. "Somehow I doubt I am the only one, giving your open and gentle nature. And did I add caring? What else did you say? Superb, grand, remarkable?" My teasing smile came back, and I indulged myself in enjoying it.

I bowed a deep, ceremonial bow that I used only in court, that is to say a few times a year. "At your service, M'lady," I added.
I enjoyed making her laugh, it made me think of children's giggles, innocent and light.

"Ah, Grand Seigfried, I feel I am in debt to you simply by being graced with your presence." Returning his formal bow with a deep curtsy of my own, I ruined the image by grinning. "Please, accept the book as a gift, for as I have read it twice through I have the layout of it memorized. Besides," I added, still teasing, "It would do my heart good to know it graced your libraries."

I couldnt keep a large smile from my face as Joie spontaneously gave me her book.
"Your donation will go down in history, my gracious Lady de Mornay. The book will be honored as a relic of your lovely person generations onwards," I replied, eyes twinkling with laughter.

Play-acting as if I were abashed by his words, I stepped back some before dissolving into a grin. "You give me too much honor, truly," I said, joy on my face.

I smiled and chuckled some, but regained my composure. "My assistant must think we've gone daft." Whispering I added, "serves well her indiscretion."
More calmly this time, I said, "Did you have any plans for the afternoon?"

I laughed again at his whisper, having gotten somewhat of the same feeling from the woman when I first came in.
"I don't, actually," I said, smiling. "I was planning mostly on doing minor upkeeps to my sister and I's townhome. Either that or window shopping," I added, my smile slipping into a grin.
"How about yourself?"

I stifled a small yawn. "To be sincere, if I had it my way, I would go home and rest. But I must keep the fort for another few hours, so I think I will start informing myself on the Yeshuite art of bone-mending."

A wicked grin covered my lips, though I stifled it as quickly as I could with a more sincere one. "Sounds as if somebody had a long night." I grinned, then continued on without making him answer it. "I should probably get going and let you get back to your patients. Besides, I've been thinking on a few things since meeting you last night, and I do believe they need to be mulled over once again."
Running my hands over my hips, I straightened my dress, the grin gone from my face as I became more thoughtful. "I do thank you for your time, Grand Seigfried."

I sobered up as Joie became a somber figure of thoughtfulness. Something was bothering her, obviously, but I was not the one to pry.
"You're always welcome here, Joie," I smiled warmly. I hesitated a moment, wanting to offer my help, then thought if she'd wanted it she would probably have asked, and resolved to let things be as they were.
Opening the door for her, I stood by it gallantly, and said, "It would be highly impolite of me not to walk you to your carriage, Mylady."

He had taken notice of my somber mood, I saw, and it seemed to have quieted him somewhat. Taking one of his great hands in both my own, I gave it a gentle squeeze, reassuring. "My thoughts are nothing troublesome, let me assure you, but more exciting should I decide to act upon them." Squeezing his hand once more, I let it go. "I promise, too, that I'll tell you about them at a later date if things begin to fall into place."
Giving him a bright smile, I stepped through the doorway as he held it, moving along the hallway toward the exit. "Why thank you gallant sir. I shall remember this gesture always." A twinkle lit my eye as I peeked around at him, smiling still.

I smiled gently at Joie. What a fascinating woman she was. In two strides, I walked to her, and offering my arm, I told her "I only wish to see you happy, Joie. It is hearwarming."

Taking his arm without hesitation, I gave him a warm smile in return for his words. "And I you, Siegfried. Very much so."
The walk to my carriage was short and simple, and inside a moment we were there. Leaning up I gave him the kiss of farewell, my hands clasped around his cheeks gently. "Have a wonderful day," I said with a smile, then climbed into my carriage.
As it started to roll away I pulled the curtian back, calling out an open window to him in a happy, jesting tone. "Have more long nights too." Grinning as the carriage turned and cut view of him, I settled back in my seat, poorer for a book but richer for a friendship.

"To you too," I called, answering her jest. I watched her carriage take her into the buzzing city, and couldn't help but feel incredibly grateful that I'd met her.
I walked back to the practice, for I had much correspondance to issue, but my heart was light.
I'd made a friend today, and it was a ravishing thought. For the first time in a long time, I had the sensation that I belonged in the city, and it was wonderful.
