I’d remained silent and finally had torn my gaze off his – the tension was thick as Ephesian Kafae, and it was nigh unbearable. I didn’t say anything else, swallowing a little, trying to keep my wits. I had a heart in my care, I reminded myself.
When he was done with applying the dressing, I felt almost relieved – one more minute in this proximity and… I wasn’t sure what. “Thank you,” I said with a little smile, my countenance returning with the distance between us. I moved off the table, wincing for the movement, and gathered the robe about me. “I won’t be long,” I said as I started on my way to the screen where my dress awaited me.

"Take your time," I said wit ha smile as she disappeared. I began to clean things up as I fought against my more impulsive side.

Quietly I reached the screen, and slipped on my gown with more ease than last time – no corset to wear, a front lacing. It was easier, less complicated, faster as well. I was trying to contain myself, and doing a fair job of it, feeling a strange mix of longing and guilt over the whole affair, paired with anticipation for my next marquing. The whole thing made me sigh, and yet, I smiled. It was very contradictory, and somewhat frustrating.
In silence, I returned and waited patiently as I observed Darien (gods, but he was beautiful) busying himself, fussing with his instruments. In truth, I could have observed him all day. I wasn't sure, but I think a soft smile creased my lips.

I felt eyes on me and looked over at Geraldine, a smile touching my lips.
"How does it feel?" I asked, turning so I could lean back against the counter as I looked at her. "Does it hurt as much as last time?"

I smiled, gathering a few seconds before I answered his question, basking in him. Gods, but seeing him this way made me… I wasn’t sure what it did to me. I had to pace a little to keep my mind straight, my eyes regretfully wandering off his form a moment, and to… I did not even know what I was looking at - it didn't matter, after all.
“Much less,” I replied with a tender smile. “You didn’t make me laugh, thank you.” I took a breath, and added, “But seeing as there are no needles pressed to my skin now…” I paused, turning to look at him with a happy smile. “Laughing would be alright.”

"And here I am without a witty joke at the ready," I replied, chuckling. "Perhaps I should plan for an Orchis to come in right before you next time so I am prepared."

I tried not to laugh, my lips’ corners crinkling, and I let out a small giggle. “You’re doing just fine with improvisation, Darien,” I replied merrily. “But if you wish to make special arrangements on my behalf, by all means…” I made a small permissive gesture that would have been regal if I hadn’t felt ridiculous doing it, my eyes light and happy. I tried to look serious, and failed, my face splitting into a happy grin.

"I just might," I replied with a chuckle.
My laughter faded and my smile turned softer. "It was good to see you again Geraldine."

“Likewise, Darien,” I replied with a more sober expression, understanding it was time for me to leave. My gaze was gentle, though, somewhat tender for it. My reciprocation had been sincere.
“So I guess we should make an appointment for the rest?” I asked with a lifted eyebrow. I was regretting that our time was coming to an end, but I expected he had another appointment, seeing as he said he had only time for an inch today.

"Yes, that way I can be sure and have time for whatever amount you want done," I replied, gesturing for her to proceed me through the door back to the front room.

I nodded and moved back to the front room making sure my girdle was safely attached to my belt – it tended to get loose when I dressed and undressed. “Yes, and I’ll be able to give my Dowayne fair warning as far as assignations go.” My stroll was leisurely, a little bit elegant, and I smiled as I felt the comfortable fabric swoosh through the door.
Once we were back in the front office, I showed him the letter of my factor, indicating the sum of what I’d saved from my assignations. “I want to get as much done as possible, but I don’t think it would do to be incapacitated for weeks…” I said as the figure was dropped on his desk. Last time I’d been in, he had suggested we go slowly, and I agreed with the wisdom of his advice.

I did calculations of time and money in my head. "Well, we could schedule you for a full inch next time," I said. "How does that sound?"

“That’s fine,” I replied with a little grin. “When would you be available, then?”

I went to the counter and flipped open my scheduling book. "Do you want time to take assignations between work?"

I shrugged. “The Royal Hunt Fete is passing and I’ve not been assigned. Who knows?” Inwardly, I thought seeing him sooner rather than later wasn’t a bad thing. “I don’t need more time, for now.”

"Alright," I said with a smile, checking my schedule again. "Two weeks from today, at one?"

I nodded in acceptance, and proceeded to fumble in my purse. “I can pay this session now,” I said practically. “Good accounts are best,” I added with a little smile.

As she set about making payment, I marked her appointment down in my book and then retrieved her contract and made a note about the additional work that had been done today.

The coin was set in front of him as was my habit, in orderly rows, and I smiled. “It’s always a pleasure, Darien. Was there anything else?” I asked gently.

I could think of a million things, but none of them could be said to Darien in the confines of a marquing session, or maybe even ever. I felt… shy. I blushed for my thoughts, and looked away. “I shouldn’t abuse of your time, Darien,” I told him softly.

“You’re welcome to come back and abuse my time whenever you like,” I replied, smiling. “Stay well, Geraldine.”

“And you as well,” I answered sweetly, keeping merry eyes on him a bit longer than warranted, before I made my way to the exit. I paused, turned, and sent him one last smile before I let the bustle of Night’s Doorstep absorb me. Gods. Two weeks. I supposed that gave me enough time for an assignation… I was thinking the relief wouldn't hurt.

I sighed softly when she left, then busied myself with straightening things and getting ready for my next appointment, letting my work absorb my mind so my thoughts wouldn’t linger on how much I had wanted to kiss her.
