His tone was reassuring, and his explanation made every bit of sense. "Who was the last person you painted?"

"A noblewoman whose name I cannot mention," I said with a chuckle. "The painting was for her lover."

I chuckled too then stopped, afraid I would mess up his work. "Do you get a lot of commissions that way?"

I held still as she laughed, waiting for her skin to be still again before continuing on.
"I do actually," I said with a smile as I began to work again.

The stinging began anew after the pause for my body to still, and I had to remind myself to relax. "Anything scandalous?" I asked with a teasing tone, though secretly I was quite interested.

"A few. I've been commissioned to paint lovers doing what they enjoy doing the most," I told her, chuckling at the memories. "That was interesting."

My smile was delighted. "Now that could be beautiful," I said. "Among other adjectives."

"The finished painting was quite beautiful," I agreed with a smile. "Though it did take several sessions to get everything just right."
Setting my tools down, I straightened back up. "I'm done, but don't move," I told her. "The ink needs to set the rest of the way."
I took a cloth and dabbed away a few spots of blood.

The sharp pinching was over, but it still hurt. Especially when he dabbed at it, the cloth feeling rough against my irritated skin. "How does it look?" I asked, unable to crane around to find out.

"Perfect," I said with a grin. "Hold still and I'll get mirrors so you can see."
I gathered the two mirrors, handing her the handheld one and positioning it, then angling the other one over her newly colored flesh. "How does it look?" I asked her.

I looked in the mirror and a soft gasp escaped my lips. It was the combination of the beauty, and the final realization that these lines were truly being engraved into my skin. I ignored the red skin surrounding the area, tracing the intricate patterns that blossomed under my skin with my eyes. I had to tear myself from the mirror. "Oh thank you sir."

I felt a rush of pride at her reaction. Pride and honor for being able to be the one to begin to make permanent measure of her progress towards becoming a free adept.
"You're very welcome," I said with a smile. I set both the mirrors aside. "I'll apply a salve now to help with the healing and pain, then bandage you up."

"Wonderful," I breathed and let him do his work. "How long should it take to heal?" I asked after a moment, thinking of my promised assignation with the charming Gabriel.

"It depends on how quickly you heal, but I would say around a week. You didn't bleed excessively and your skin seems no more irritated than usual," I answered.
Returning with the salve and bandages, I began to gently apply the salve to her back.

It was incredibly comforting to know my body had reacted in a usual manner. Hopefully I would heal well also. Too many horror stories floated about the Houses about marques going... negatively.
His hands were deft and the salve cool, soothing my irritated skin. I let all my muscles relax from where they had tensed from the pain. "What should I know about caring for it?" I was sure I could get advice when I got home, but I wanted to get instructions from a source I could whole-heartedly trust.

"Keep it as dry as possible, but only pat it dry for the next week if it does get wet," I instructed as I applied a second layer of salve. "Take it as easy as you can for the next couple of days so that the skin doesn't stretch any more than it has to."
I stepped back. "Sit up if you could, slowly, so I can bandage you."

There was no way of remaining modest and following his instructions, so I didn't bother, sitting up as requested. "That's tender," I commented as my skin truly moved for the first time with the added ink.

"It will be for a bit," I said as I efficiently bandaged her up. "The salve will help and I'll give you a little jar of it to take. Apply it twice a day until it's gone. If the pains not better in a couple days, come back to see me or go to a chirurgeon."
Bandaging done, I cleared away my tools so she could stand. "Need a hand?"

I pull the robe over me as he began clearing things away. My movements were slow as I took stock of what hurt and what movements didn't bother me. It didn't seem too bad. "Thank you, I should be able to manage," I replied, sliding down off the table gingerly. "How long should I keep the bandage on?" I asked, going back behind the screen to dress again.

"Mostly until it's not sore any longer, but at least for two days," I answered as I cleaned up.

I took a moment from the questions to slip my dress on. I was glad for the extra layer of the bandage as my skin protested as I dressed. I didn't want to think on what it would have felt like to have the gown rubbing directly against the skin.
I reemerged from the screen, taking the jar of salve from the table and slipping it into my pocket. "Anything else I should know?"

I grinned and went on tiptoe to kiss his cheek. "Thank you sir. I hope to see you again soon."

Smiling, I leaned down so she could reach my cheek easier.
"I hope I see you again soon as well," I said. "Good luck with your future patrons."

I smiled at him once more before leaving, my step light even as my movements were slightly ginger.

I smiled after her as she left, then turned my attention to straightening up my workshop. She was a very nice girl and I really did wish her the best, hoping to work on her again soon.
