I frowned. "Shouldn't I come to you? Last I checked, Bryony was meticulous about contracts."

"They are," I replied, unpleased for the crease of confusion on his brow, "about that, and many other things as well. I was just offering to come by for a chat," I explained truthfully. This way, if Bryony retained me, all he would need would be to come by the House. If I'd gone, well... it would give me an opportunity to update.
I was tempted to tell him, but I didn't want to, just yet. Business deals are like pregnancies - best not too speak to early, and jinx them.

"All right," I said, "then I look forward to seeing you after the Hunt fete." I didn't need to look at her soul to tell she was hiding something, but it didn't seem like a dastardly secret, so I let it go.

"You're not attending, then?" I asked curiously. It was almost a dismissal, but I thought he somewhat liked me, or at least, that he wanted me. One last question wasn't the end of the world. Reese seemed rather inclined to keeping me to himself, if his behavior was any indication - too bad. I still owed him a dance, after all.

"I wasn't planning on it," I said. "My cousin Sirena is throwing a fete only a few days before, and I can't take more than one day off from work due to hangover or lack of sleep. But I hope you have a wonderful time."

“That’s too bad,” I replied with a playful pout, not allowing myself to think at what could possibly go on at a Shahrizai fete. Eh, I enjoyed a rough tumble in the hay and savage love-making, but I’d rather eat my own underdrawers before I’d let anyone take a lash to me… or before I’d inflict pain. A vague memory from Caraf L’Envers’ wedding floated to the surface – Pieter had been fascinated by the Duchesse. It took all I had to repress the shudder the memory summoned.
“I’ll see you later then,” I added, smiling flirtily. “Until then…” I leaned in, and kissed his other cheek fleetingly, “Be good to yourself.”

"I will," I said, raising a hand in goodbye. "Take care."

I was half tempted to blow him a kiss – and voted against it. Give too much, and they don’t see it as a challenge. Instead, I paused as I opened the door, and gave him a playful wave… and then I was gone.
