Once outside the wall, I urged Soir into a little faster pace, but not a run yet since I didn't know which way Nic wanted to head.
"I wouldn't count on winning anytime soon," I teased. "Soir and I enjoy beating you boys too much to let you win yet."

Laughing, I let Noche keep pace with Soir and turned to look at Leyna. "But I have patience, and faith in Noche to eventually find the secret to beating Soir. It may take me all winter to win a race, but I will eventually win one. Then I'll get to claim a prize, and we can see if my ideas are as fun as yours," I teased.

"Now I'm torn between still wanting to win and seeing what ideas you come up with," I said, laughing.

With an evil grin and a sinister chuckle I said, "Ah, confusion- the very tool of my victory! Now I just have to find a way to keep you stuck between those choices and you'll be unable to react!"
Leaning over, I brushed a faint kiss against her cheek, then sat back up. Looking over at her and making sure I had a good grip on the reins I said, "Ready- set-go." With a slight press of my knees into Noche's side he was off.

I laughed at his attempts at distraction. Leaning forward I whispered a command and urged Soir after them. With the grace her line had been bred for, she surged forward.
I pressed myself close to her neck, my laughter trailing behind us as we gained on them, catching up in what seemed no time. I applied just enough pressure on her reins to keep her next to Noche .

Soir pulled up next to me and stayed there, her breath barely labored, and I knew Leyna was holding her in. Unsure of whether to be insulted or touched by the gesture, I chose instead to be amused. Removing one hand from the reins and blew her a kiss, then cut Noche down a side path, knowing him well eough to cut the turn as closely as possible.

We missed the turn entirely and I had to let Soir circle around and then head down the path Nic had taken.
I caught sight of them and urged Soir on, letting her have her head.
We passed them by and I cut down the next side path, choosing to be the chasee instead of the chaser.

Since she was ahead of me I could watch the turn she took and follow as closely as I could, waiting until a moment when I could take advantage of Noche's skills. He was carrying less weight than usual, so his speed was better, but he was still no match for Soir in speed alone. Cleverness and quick wits were what I needed, so I kept my eyes open and waited.

I shifted my weight back, slowing Soir's pace, not wanting to get too far ahead of them.
The path widened and I moved to one side, leaving them space to pull alongside us when they caught up.

Sighing and mentally conceeding victory I pulled up next to Leyna and Soir. "Once again, the prize is yours," I said with a grin.

Letting Soir slow to a walk, I laughed.
"You give up to easy," I said, reaching down and patting Soir's neck.

"Do you think so?" I asked with a raised brow. "I just know how far in front of me Soir is, and where the point of no return is for Noche and I. No use possibly hurting him on a fool's errand, I guess."
Smiling, I said, "One of these days you'll have to ride a different horse, so I can see whether it's you or Soir that makes it so difficult for me to win."

"I was teasing," I told him, smiling. "And I can tell you now, it's Soir. There's no other horse my family has bred that came up with both her speed and stamina."
She had taken to ignoring Noche again, feeling superior from her win I was sure.
"Noche does better than just about any other horse, he has a lot of speed for his size," I observed.

"He does what he can, but he really wasn't built for sprinting- more for going long distances with a great deal of weight. I think these little races will help him with that, so thank you for indulging me and coming with." Leaning over, I lightly brushed her cheek with my lips. "Besides, you're prettier to look at than the countryside."

I blushed, ducking my head forward to hide the color in my cheeks with the fall of my hair.
"Thank you," I said.
Unable to think of a reply I busied myself with leaning forward and pressing my palm against Soir's neck, feeling the rate of her pulse to make sure she was cooling down after the run.

She blushed and hid, and I reached over to push her hair behind her ear. "You're welcome," I said as I let my hand run over her cheek and then pull away to pat Noche. "What's your favorite color?" I asked, curious and wanting to make conversation.

"Blue," I told him, grateful for something besides his touch to think about.
I straightened up and looked over at him.
"What's yours?" I asked.

"Shylah," I said, grinning. "Other than that I can't pick one. I love them all, even the smelly dirty ones. You?"

"Noche," I replied. "Though I've always liked the great cats they keep in menageries as well. What is your happiest memory?"

"The first time we kissed," I said, not thinking about what I was saying. I blushed again, I really was going to stay this color.
"You?" I asked when I could finally find my voice

I was a little suprised by her answer- I didn't think I'd made that much of an impression- but strangely uplifted by it, made happier than before. "The same," I said in all honesty. "What are you doing tonight?"

"You do come up with the most amazing ideas," I told him.

I looked up at the sun, trying to gauge what time it was now and how long it would take to do the things I needed to do before dinner.
"Eight?" I suggested.

"Sounds good," I said as I leaned over and gently kissed her cheek. I had some things I needed to do myself, so that was a good time. "I'll be there to pick you up at eight then." I fought down the urge to lean over and kiss her more deeply in happiness, instead revelling in the faint smell of apples on the air.

"We should probably turn back," I said, smiling. "It'll take a lot longer walking them back."
I turned Soir around.
"What's your favorite thing o do when you're alone?" I asked him, enjoying this getting to know each other better.

"Not a thing, really," I said with a laugh as I turned Noche around to walk next to Soir again . "I've always liked being around people. Reading is the only thing I can thing of that I actually do when I'm by myself most of the time, so I guess that wins; still, I'd rather be around people and doing other things. What about you?
