She didn’t trust me either. I drew in a deep breath, letting the hurt wash through me and away. “If you had wanted that, you could have asked earlier. I understand that this is hard for you. If it’ll make it easier, of course.”

"I didn't think there was a need to ask, I didn't know that she wanted you like that," I told him, my voice breaking slightly at the end. Hating that crack of weakness, I looked down at my hands where they lay folded primly on my lap. "You don't trust me around her and I don't trust her around you."

I dropped the shirt into a heap on the bed and returned to her. Dropping to my knees again, I took her hands into mine. "There will only truly be two women in my life Mala. You and Synnove. Not her mother. When I asked for your hand, I wasn't only offering marriage. I want to only wake up beside you."

I wanted desperately to believe him, but I knew how much he ached for a child and how much hold that child's mother would have on him. Christophe's soul was as kind and sweet as mine was twisted, and I knew that woman could use it against him.
"What if it's a boy?" I asked, puzzled by the conviction of the child's sex.

I shrugged. "I wanted to ask, but Soleil seemed dead set on the fact that it would be a girl. If not, I shall have to come up with another name." I knew she was deflecting from the problem, but let her do it for the moment, my thumbs stroking the hands in my own.

I leaned forward slightly, letting my head rest lightly against his.
"I don't want to talk about this anymore," I told him softly. "please."

"As you wish my love." I replied in kind. "Would you like me to brush out your hair, or were you done?"

"I would like that very much," I replied, smiling softly. I had been done, but I would not pass on his offer I enjoyed him brushing my hair very much.

I gave her a small smile and rose, fetching the brush from her vanity. I could tell that she didn't truly need me to on the first stroke, but continued, not minding at all. I brushed in silence for a time, before remembering something. "Oh, I was planning on going out tomorrow."

Letting my eyes close, I made a soft sound of happiness as he brushed my hair.
"Were you?" I asked, my eyes staying closed. "Where to?"

"Thought I'd go see if I could find a certain piece of jewelery that could do you justice." I told her, grin evident in my voice though my hands kept up their smooth, soothing rhythm.

At his words, an image of a ring rose in my mind and I smiled. It didn't matter what the ring looked like since it was from Christophe, but I couldn't help having my preferences.
Opening my eyes, I looked at him in the mirror. "I guess that means I can't come along," I said, still smiling.

"I did recruit help in my search, but you are more than welcome." I told her with a smile. "You say you trust me, but I have little experience choosing engagement rings."

"I should hope this is your first and last experience in such a matter," I told him, laughing softly.
I reached back and down, caressing his calf softly.
"Don't be too long though, I was hoping to go to L'Roches soon."

I made an agreeable sound. "I like the sound of that. But I wouldn't want to rush a good thing, only to find out years later that you thought it was ugly." I teased with a smile, putting down the brush and gather her hair in my hands.

"I will love it, no matter what, I told you that," I said, chuckling. "I will tell everyone you picked it out all by yourself."

"Oh, that's a great comfort." I said sarcastically, laughing. I began to braid her hair, if only as an excuse to run my fingers through it.

"I do what I can," I replied, smiling.
I could happily sit for hours and let him play with my hair, I was so content I nearly purred.

I chuckled. "So do you actually want your hair braided? It might take a little while, another thing I'm not very practiced with."

"I meant I do what I can to comfort you, but as for braiding my hair that's up to you," I told him, chuckling. "I am rather fond of the way it feels when you play with my hair, so you can do as you like."
I reached my hand up and back to caress his cheek. "Or, you could brush it smooth again and we could do somewhat else. Did you eat this morning?"

"I stopped by the kitchen, grabbed a roll on my way out." I told her, taking the second option and picking up the brush again.

"Well, if I brush your hair anymore, it's going to start rising under its own volition." I told her with a smile, putting the brush down lest I cause any static.

Chuckling, I stood up and moved to where I could but my arms around his neck and lean my body against his.
"You know, you haven't kissed me yet today," I pointed out, smiling at him.

"Now that should be a sin." I told her with a smile, leaning down and kissing her gently, taking my time. My arms around her, I drew back enough to murmur, "Good morning love."

"Good morning, my love," I replied, smiling softly against his lips.
I laid my head against his chest for a moment, just drinking in the feel of him, feeling all stress and worry melt away.

We stode for a moment, wrapped in each others arms before my stomach made its feelings known, rather loudly. I laughed. "Shall we go?"

"I think we'd better," I said, laughing softly.
I untangled myself from him, then went to the door and called for the carriage to be readied as I finished dressing. I slipped on a pair of low boots and the gloves that went with my dress. Tying a pouch of coin to my belt I looked at Christophe.
"Ready," I told him.
