I grinned, giving her an indulgent look, and immediately deciding it wouldn’t do. Little sister indeed. I was almost 10 years older ! She’d hate it, though, if I condescended. I remembered well enough how I hated when my brothers did.
“An ailing twenty-five,” I replied in a breaking voice that sounded like it was three times older. “And counting… But do tell me I don’t look like I could be your mother, I think I’d die on the spot,” I added dramatically.

I shook my head with a laugh. It seemed this Bryony had a touch of the dramatic in her. "My mother is at least ten years older than you." Though I couldn't tell you what she looked like.

I felt like laughing too, but I contained it, instead giving an exaggerated sigh of relief. "That's a load off, Nyx. I'd rather pretend to be your sister, if you don't mind," I added, my shoulders starting to move a little from the repressed urge to laugh.

"Well I didn't have a sister before today, so I'll take it." I replied with a grin.

Even if I felt like laughing at my own ridiculous self, her answer, troublingly sincere, sobered me up a little, and I replied gently, "It's a winning deal, I didn't either." The door to Desir was looming, and I said, grinning, "Thank Elua we're getting close. I was starting to feel my tummy dissolve."

"I hear that's near fatal," I teased. "We better get you inside and get some food in you." I opened the door for her, and followed her in for lunch.
