I examined the pieces with glee. The animals were too childlike for the room I envisioned, so the military ones were perfect. The tables were solid wood, and inlaid with ivory and onyx. They were perfect. "Do you have stools or chairs to go with this table?" I asked, pointing to the one with the military pieces.

"I do in fact," I said, stepping to the side to reveal two slim chairs that perfectly matched the table.

I nodded. "Those will do. They are excellent."

"It's nine hundred and twenty-five for the set," I told her.

I was a little galled by the price of the set, but Alain had said spare no expense, and I wanted this library to be perfect. "All right, very good," I said, a little bit hesitantly.

"It's a one of a kind piece," I said, hearing the lack of surety in her voice. "All the pieces are solid ivory and jade."
"Also," I added with a smile. "Should you get it home and decide you don't like it, I will take it back and return the full purchase price to you. You aren't locked into buying it should you get everything together in the library and find it doesn't fit."

Reassured by her words, I nodded. "That is just fine. Thank you."

"You mention some side tables and knick-knacks as well. Would you like to look around and see what catches your eye or did you have something in mind?" I asked, still smiling pleasantly.

"I think I will come back for knickknacks another time," I said, "but in terms of side tables, they should be level with the arms of our armchairs, about this high -" I demonstrated "- and should be of a dark wood, with a drawer for pens and such things. A small candelabra will rest on each one, for light."

I tapped lightly at my chin with my finger as I thought about my inventory.
"I am not certain we have something exactly like that at the moment," I said, turning slightly and looking around. "The dark wood tables I have right now are either fairly low or don't have drawers."
Turning back to her, I smiled.
"There is a shipment coming in two days that will have some tables like that, or I can recommend a couple of other stores for you try," I told her.

I nodded. "That would be lovely," I said. "If I don't find anything, I will be sure to return two days hence."

"I shall write down the names of the stores for you to check out and sign my name, if you do find something you like at those stores, show them my signature and they will make sure and give you their best price," I said.

"It has been a pleasure," I told her. "Would you care to look around while I write up the receipt?"

"Thank you," I said, "but I should be returning home as soon as possible. Thank you for your time and patience."
I wanted to get home as soon as possible, I needed to talk to Alain.

"I understand, let me write out your receipt then," I said, going to the counter.
Pulling out three sheets of parchment, I wrote out her receipt, my receipt and the names of the stores for her to go look through. I signed each and turned the two copies of the receipt towards her.
"If you would just look these over and then sign the bottom," I said, handing her the quill.

Mentally talling the prices in my head, I signed at the bottom pf each of the receipts. "Please have the items delivered at your earliest convenience," I reiterated.

Scattering fine sand on the parchments to dry the ink, I answered, "They will be there first thing in the morning."
Ink dry, I handed her a receipt and the list of stores.
"Good luck in finding the other items you seek, and I look forward to seeing you again," I said, smiling.

Likewise," I said. "It's been a pleasure."
Curtseying slightly to her, I tucked the papers into my purse and, with Robert trailing behind me, left the shop. I was ready to go home.

I watched her go and then tidied up my counter. It was a little odd to be that she hadn't balked at all on the price of the rug, which was something that would wear out from use, but had almost refused at the price of the chess table, something that would last forever.
It was all in the way people thought, I should know that by now.
Returning to the back of the store, I spoke to my head man and arranged for everything to be carefully packed and delivered to the Mauvais residence first thing in the morning, as promised.
