"Indeed," I replied with an amused smile. "I've been asked to leave Bryony," I said with a teasing grin. I paused there. I wanted to see her reaction.

My brows raised in surprise. "Are you going to accept?" I asked, knowing there was a whole list of variable in such a decision. "Shall I be ecstatic for you?" The last was said with a teasing grin.

I laughed at her words. “One should always be ecstatic for having a choice,” I told her merrily. “But I’ve not made up my mind just yet on the matter.” I drummed my hand on the table, thinking on how I would approach it. “Have you heard of Prince Maurice de Somerville?” I asked curiously.

I nodded. There were rumours aplenty concerning the black sheep of the de Somervilles. “Notorious gambler and cheat, though the last has never been proven. Quick to anger and quicker to seduce. Hasn’t been to the Night Court in years.” I wondered where she was going with this, as it couldn’t be Reese offering to take her from Bryony. Of all the Houses, it was said he hated Bryony the most.

“Sounds about right,” I replied with a grin. “Our Reese-darling, the charmer, gambler, cheater, player...” I tapped my chin, musing on the sing song I'd just invented. I liked him, he was entertaining.
I looked at her, very seriously – I wasn’t joking at all. “He’s asked me to leave Bryony, and work for him.” There was really no other way to say it. Besides… it was a good thing to test out the tale before I spoke to my second, even if we were on good terms.

My eyes widened again. "I would ask if you were joking, but... Working doing what? And how did you manage that? He hates adepts." Oh, this was juicy. Not that she had to worry about me repeating any of this. I just liked to gather bits like this.

I laughed, wildly amused by her reaction. "Well, let's see," I replied with a wide grin. "How would you seduce someone who doesn't quite like adepts?" I liked the game, and besides, it was a good exercise for us both.

I thought about it for a moment, head propped up on my hand. This wasn't exactly covered in class at Cereus. "By making him assume you're not until he's fully seduced?" I asked, then spotted the hole in that plan. "Though that could be dangerous, if their beliefs are more important than their lust."

“It’s a gamble,” I replied with a little smile. “But then again, what good would be a Bryony adept if they didn’t gamble?” I added with a wry grin. I took a sip, and added, “The truth is, he didn’t ask my house name, not until we were well into flirting and gaming, and by then, it was too late,” I explained. “He has good reasons for hating my House, you know, but deep down, I think he understands that I’m not like the adept who made him hate the Night Court.”

I nodded in understanding. "How long have you been seeing one another?" I asked, wondering what had happened to my sources for not reporting such scandalous news.

I laughed. “That’s the glorious part. I’ve seen him once, and will again soon. He’s taking me to the Royal Hunt Fete.” I winked, and added, “You know, one of those conveniently lost wagers…”
I paused and took a sip of wine. “Count your self blessed,” I said. “You are the first person with whom I share this juicy bit. Bryony hasn’t been advised yet… though there may be nothing to advise them about. I haven’t decided yet.”

My eyebrows went up again. "You're the blessed one, from the sound of it. Met him once, and your prince is already offering to take you from Bryony? You work fast." My tone was admiring. This was a fairy tale, repeated in envious whispers. "Which way are you leaning?"

"Thank you, Nyx," I replied with a little grin. I thought a moment about her question, and pensively replied. "I'm tempted, I'll admit. He wants me to run a gambling operation for him, which is better than being an adept for ever. My marque is made, so all I have to do is leave. It would be more lucrative, that's for sure, and I could stay in the service if I intended to... which, incidentally, for now, I do." There was only two problems, and one of them had nothing to do with Reese... I frowned, thinking.

“Bah,” I said as I broke from my thoughts. “I feel a little bit… It’s a gamble, really,” I said. “I’ve always been cautious with the things that really had a material risk to them. His business is new, who knows if it will take off? And….” I sighed, “It’s not a love match, and will never be.” It dawned on me… I really needed to talk to Pieter about this. Rumor could well change what was a business deal to something more intimate, and I had no intention of letting that happen.

"What if it doesn't work? Is your patron base not large enough to support you on your own?" I asked. It seemed like a logical argument to me, after her comments concerning said patrons.

I shrugged. “It would be, I suppose. But in truth, it wouldn’t be a comfortable life. I could go home, though,” I added with a sigh. I didn’t relish it much, but the possibility was there. It would be embarrassing, though.
“I’m tempted, I’ll admit,” I said at length. “A chance to be me again, not an adept, that’s not to be turned down lightly….”

I nodded in understanding. Like I had told Darien, I never wished that I wasn't an adept, but I did wish I could see Keegan more often. "Well, you've met the prince. Will his venture succeed?"

“I’m no Gentian to predict the future,” I replied, ignoring the little blister my own sentence caused, “but I think he has an uncanny amount of luck, and a good investment to start. It’s not doomed to fail, I don’t think.”
I grinned with mischief, and added, “And he’s very sensual.” In the end, it would be lust that would balance it out, likely. That, and the freedom to be with my lover as a woman, rather than an adept, if I willed it.

I chuckled lightly. “Well… he has this way of touching you that ignites your very being into arousal… and I daresay, he is a hedonist himself, without a doubt.”
I didn’t add that we’d coupled nigh publicly. I’d outdone myself, that time – it was much more daring than my closet adventures with Troy, although… I wondered what had become of my Jasmine friend. It had been a while since I’d heard of him.

I saw the look in her eyes and it made me chuckle. "Is that why you like him so, because he's a hedonist?"

It wasn’t a chuckle, it was a giggle – those aren’t so common to me. “I guess you found me out,” I replied with a grin. “I can’t help it, I like to have fun,” I added with a look of fake guilt. “I’m not in love, though,” I commented. “Just, you know… I like him, he’s fun.”
He didn’t stir me like I knew I could be stirred. No. What made my heart quiver was probably more surprising than one could expect – it was innocence. I wasn’t sure why, but that, in a man, completely undid me.

I chuckled again, more from the giggle that escaped her lips than anything else. "At least you know you would like your job," I pointed out with a grin.

“Oh, that, I would, undoubtedly,” I replied with a wide grin. “And I like to think it is a step up, since I would be his first mate, you know, not so different from being Second, in a way.” That made me think of Fisher’s recent rise, and added, “I am certain that you heard about the nomination of Fisher no Bryony as Second. That means I have little to look forward to in my House, as far as advancement is concerned.”
I smiled. By many ways, it was a good decision to take, I thought. The more we discussed it, the more my mind was made. I still wanted to talk to Fisher, though. I owe him that much, and I wanted his opinion on the matter.

I nodded, having listened to all the rumours swirling around Bryony with interest. Second's weren't chosen everyday. "Did you want to be nominated?" I assumed she had, it seemed every adept thought of it wishfully. But with a Bryony, you didn't truly assume. It would get you into trouble.

I shrugged, making a non-committal sound. “Meh. Not really, maybe…” I took a sip and finally decided, “I was never much for licking Gaspard’s boots, Nyx. That, and well…” I gave her a guilty grin. “Fisher was always better behaved than I,” I confessed. “That doesn’t mean I don’t have any ambitions, though… hence my consideration for the gracious offer.”

What sort of Dowayne would expect such behaviour from his adepts? I didn't suck up to Donatien. Did I?
"Well, I wish you all the best in deciding," I said with a smile. "Let me know when you do. I'll be most interested."

“I will,” I said with a little smile. “Perhaps next time we can pay a visit together to Orchis, seeing as we both have friends there,” I added with a lazy, charming smile. I stretched, and looked with regret at my empty glass of wine. Too bad Desir didn’t give free seconds.

"I'm always up for an excuse to visit Orchis," I said with a slightly impish smile. It would be good to have company with us as well. Coming home from the L'Envers had to be an exception, not the rule, and we both loved each other so. "And then you can meet who Lauraine is getting so worked up over."
