"It's not overactive," I said slyly, "I merely...explore all possible options."

"I bet the Valerians love you." I said with a laugh.

"If they don't, I'll make them," I said, still bitter about my encounter with Mara. "Judging from her oh so hasty reply to my Longest Night offer, I can name one who would rather not see me again." I didn't much care at this point, there would be many adepts at Malabelle's fete. But to be insulted by an adept was not easily forgotten.

I didn't need to ask what happened, I could guess from Soliel's tone. "I would have some doubts about her, to turn down a Shahrizai by fostering."

"Let her," I scoffed, "if she is foolish enough to do such a thing, she must be either secretly in love or have a patron in a very high place. Or both. Either way, it is nothing to me. There are many adepts in this city and very few of them are foolish enough to turn down a generous contract."

It was never easy to be spurned in love, adept or not, but I let her speak her white lies. "And many will be at our beck and call in a few nights." My grin was small, but not any less wicked.

"Yes, that they will." I smiled, for real this time. "It's been a long time since my last fete, I hope I am not disappointed."
At that moment, the waiter chose to arrive with our food, setting two steaming plates in front of us. "Thank you," I said. The food looked and smelled absolutely delicious, but I waited for Anacrasia to begin. She was still my older foster-sister and a duchesse, and as such commanded my respect.

I nodded to the server as our meals arrived, then took a delicate bite. After a delicate pause, the server discretely left, and I mentally noted to tip him well.
"I somehow doubt you will be." I said before taking another bite. "Just come to me if you're alone by the end of the night, I'm sure I can arrange something." I met her eyes over our dishes with a smile.

"I'll remember that, thank you," I said with a smile. "Would you like to prepare for the fete at my home? My chambermaid is a former Balm adept, and an excellent masseuse and cosmetic artist." I took a bite of my guinea fowl. It was absolutely delicious.

"Yes, of course, thank you for the offer." I replied, touched that she would open her house to me.

"It's my pleasure, that's what friends are for," I replied. I had always known it deep down, but Anacrasia was probably the only person I could trust. Everyone else had political games to play, but Anacrasia had never sought to use me for her own ends, and for that I was grateful to her.

"So what else have you been up to?" I asked, taking another bite of simply delicious rice.

I sipped my tea, savoring the heat of it in my mouth. "The usual," I said. "Managing my estate, paperwork for the crown...searching for someone worthy enough to give me an heir..." This one I smiled dryly at. "What about you?"

"Ordering the affairs at home. I'm afraid I terrified the senchual before I left, and he's afraid of deciding anything on his own at the moment. He'll calm down, but it's tedious at the moment. Between that and setting up the townhome how I want it, I've been up to my ear with womanly affairs." I made a slight face.

I made the same face in empathy. "Have you been forced to tend the house yourself, or have you found a maid?"

I made another face. "The one I have now is only slightly better than the first twit that I had." I forced a small smile to my lips and went for a joke to ignore my annoyance. "I'm looking for another, but I've gotten exacting in my old age."

"Quite the crone you are," I said, keeping my expression sincere, but my voice sarcastic. "You should try at the Thirteen Houses, I'll bet they have references for former adepts." I took a bite of guinea fowl.

I looked at her in a mixture of thanks, and disgust at myself.
"By the gods..." I shook my head at myself. "What would I do without you?" I asked her.

"Your life would be meaningless and empty, and you'd grow old and die alone in Kusheth, with no one to comfort you," I said, with a twinkle in my eye. "Also, you're welcome."

I smiled at that. "No one to comfort me at all? I wouldn't be able to find anyone?"

I pretended to ponder her question. "No, I can't think of anyone."
I grinned evilly at her, eating up the last bits of my meal.

I shook my head, laughing. "Oh my dear, it really has been too long."
I finished my meal, delicately wiping all traces from my lips. "Do you have plans for this afternoon? I was planning on doing some shopping."

"Perfect." I signalled the waiter and settled the bill, tipping generously. It never did to be seen as a spend-thrift. A moment later we were strolling out of Desire, headed for the shops.
