"But what of you? Do you think you would enjoy meeting yourself?" I asked with a smile, happy that I had made him laugh.

I had to think on it. “I don’t know. I am fine with who I am and comfortable with myself,” I answered. “But on the other hand, there may be things I do that don’t annoy me, but would annoy me in another.”

"An honest answer. I like that," I said with a smile as the server returned with our tea and snacks.

“I am happy to have pleased you with my answer,” I said, grinning. I leaned forward and inhaled the scent of my tea. “I adore the scent of ginger.”

"I had it candied once. It wasn't at all what I was expecting. May I?" I inquired, wanting to smell it for myself.

“Of course,” I said, lifting the cup and holding it closer for her to smell.

"Thank you." I took in a whiff and did my best not to make a face. "It smells like it tastes. Do you enjoy it often?"

I chuckled a little at her reaction. “I do, I like the spicy flavor,” I told her as I brought the cup back. “When I was little my mother was certain I had stomach problems because I used to get into her ginger and eat it like candy. It calms uneasy stomachs as I’m sure you know. That wasn’t it though, I just like it.”

I returned to my tea, the vanilla scent soothing. To it, I added just a little sugar and a liberal dose of cream. "You've always been a little bit of a risk-taker then. Did you worry your mother a lot?"

“Oh yes,” I said, my lips curling into a smile. “Both my parents actually.”

I chuckled and took a sip of tea. "A rebel?" I inquired with a smile.

“Not so much as that I just couldn’t be controlled,” I said, chuckling. I took a sip of my tea, enjoying the spicy bite.

I took another sip of my tea to hide my grin. Somehow, I wasn't surprised. "And do they still fret? I know my mother does."

“No, they don’t worry about me any longer,” I said, shaking my head a little. They worry about those I might hurt, I thought. “Are you close with your mother?”

"Yes," I replied, my tone indicating that we were close, but not extremely so. "Though less so since I went to Marsilikos."

“What sent you to Marsilikos?” I asked before taking a bite of one of my sandwiches.

"The war," I replied with a sad smile. "I couldn't bear the thought of not helping when our men were fighting and dying for our land."

"Yes," I said softly looking down. "Parts were very awful. Many didn't make it, and suffered greatly as they died. We saved those we could though, and it was those miracles that we held onto."

I reached across the small table and laid my hand on hers. “I’m sorry you had to experience such things,” I said softly.

I smiled again, this time wryly. "There are some that would say I was strong enough to begin with," I jested.

I chuckled and leaned back in my chair. “That sounds like some people thing you are stubborn or hard headed,” I teased before taking another sip of tea.

"I have also never been told by a spurned soldier that I reminded him of a camel," I said, laughing more. "I believe stubborn and ornery were the descriptors he used."

i laughed again, deeper this time. "I've never seen a camel in person, but I have seen pictures and the resemblance had to be the attitude for you certainly look nothing like a camel," I said, still chuckling.
