After a moment, I wiped my eyes on my skirts and tried to stop sobbing at least. When I could talk again I said,” I’m sorry, it’s just that I have lost everything in my life except for Aleron in the last two days and I can’t take anymore.”
I stood up, still gripping Aleron’s hand fiercely. “I’m sorry if I’m being rude, but unless there’s something else, I need to go be alone with the only person in my life I have left.”

"I understand," I assured her again, this time in nearly a whisper as I backed away and kept my eyes down. "I am sorry for your loss, truly. I've commissioned a factor to look after the money from the estate- the information is written down here."
Too sad to even look up I picked up the parchment and stepped forward again to offer it to her. Simon would never have wanted to see her in such a state, I knew that. I couldn't help but wonder if he'd ever thought about me with any similar depth.

I took the paper and immediately handed it to Aleron. I would have no idea what it was talking about. I released Aleron’s hand suddenly and threw my arms around the Duchesse, hugging her.
“Thank you,” I said softly before backing away and turning to Aleron again, my look telling him I needed to go. I knew that if I broke again all my walls were going to come down and all of the Duchesse pain and sadness, which I could feel like sun on the other side of a window pain, would overwhelm me along with the feelings of everyone around me. I need out and away to the safety of Aleron’s room, and quickly.

"You're welcome," I replied as softly, smiling a bit as I watched her turn away. There was a lot for each of us to think on.

Understanding Riva's look I offered her my hand again, nodded politely to the Duchesse in departing and turned us toward the door. Staying any longer would only cause more pain to the two of them and that wasn't fitting. Besides, I knew Riva wanted to truly grieve in private.

Taking Aleron’s hand, I followed him out of the room and then outside.
“Take me home, please,” I whispered desperately. Home had now become his room at Jaiden’s. It was all I had left. “Quickly…” I could feel tears running down my cheeks again.

"Yes beloved," I replied softly, giving her a swift hug before heading toward where a carriage waited.

Almost blindly I followed him to the carriage and got inside. Even the small space of the carriage felt better, more private and secure from all the pain and horror outside.

I quickly stepped in after her, sitting and then drawing her near me to wrap her in my arms. "Will you be alright?" I asked in a quiet, concerned tone.

“I don’t know,” I said, curling against him as much as possible and just wanting to be away from all this.

"Don't worry, we'll be home soon," I assured her quietly as the carriage began to sway down the street.

I just made a small sound and pressed closer to him, letting myself drown in his presence.
