I picked the two calmest nags I could find in the bunch. We did not need mounts with spirit for this. Thus when Eyvind returned with the tac it was easy to get bits in mouths and quietly lead the horses out of the back of the barn no muss and no fuss. From there it was easy enough to slip un-noticed to the outskirts away from the road. There I swung myself up on my own mount and left Eyvind to do the same and then nudged with my heels encouraging a slow trot. No need to kick up dust and draw attention and with some luck by the time the missing animals were noticed we would be long gone.

We jumped on our mounts and rode through the woods away from the town. The animals didn't seem to mind our presence and easily rode us toward our destination.
When we were a good ways out I patted my mare for his good behavior and said, "we should probably find some water soon, for both them and ourselves."

I grunted as i worked on hanging on the horse bare back "True, and we will need to deal with food for us again as well. But we can probably ride a while since we did see the lad feed them before we stole them. I want to get some distance between us and that town before these are discovered missing."

I nodded, the horses should hold out fine for a while. With a snicker on my face I said, "if we get desperate we could always eat one of the horses." I laughed and then added, "though two Skaldi trying to share a single horse bareback would look a bit crazy."
Though I had spoke of it as such, part of me liked the ideal. Though I knew that Uruz would not.

I grunted in response as we rode a while then added "Well I think this one consists of mostly back bone. I swear the beast is wedging me in two from arse to chin and its gate is about as smooth as ridding a drakkar out in a hard gale."

I laughed at Uruz's description. "While this horse isn't going to win any prizes mine isn't quite as bad. By the sound of it your horse wouldn't be worth eating either."

I looked down at the beast it was not skinny just not overly well put together. It did indeed seem to have an inordinate amount of thick bones but those probably made it sturdy. “Looks like there is a bit much bone to make for much eating not to mention I am sure she is the owner of some seriously stringy meat.” I fixed my gaze ahead as I slowed the mount since we were well away “And I would compare ridding her to taking a long trek while perched astride the bit of my ax.”

I laughed a little and nodded in some understanding. Our pace became more at ease and my horse seemed a bit happier for it, falling in stride with it's stable mate.
I was not overly familiar with the layout of the land, but we had been traveling for a little bit. "How much longer do you think we have?" I asked.

I snorted “I have no idea. Most who were along with the invasion just were able to bring back tales and those with first hand knowledge or generally dead now. So things become contorted over time and the D’Angelines are not fast to let us have the lay of their land.” I looked up at the sun “Though I hope if we are lucky we can be there in a week. I am mostly getting along by feel though.”

I nodded, not a answer with something to look forward too, but it was nice to think that we might be out of this wild land in a week. While it had some benefits, no one was trying to kill us, it would still be nice to know where one was to sleep every night. Of course I was not naive enough to think that would happen on the very first night.
I continued to ride next to him, looking around, small talk no longer coming to mind, but not really needed either. I only hoped that I would be able to prove more of a help in the new country than I had been back in Skaldi.

I rode a bit in silence and then gave voice to my thoughts “I think we should do all we can to avoid having to liberate things like we did these mounts. That can only lead to trouble. Also we will need to find regular work so that we can start building some resources. If we try and live hand to mouth I suspect we shall not live long.”

I nodded in agreement. I also did not want to think that we would be reduced to simple thieves. "You are right, I wouldn't want to deal with running away any longer than we have too. I would also prefer a honest living over one of a thief."

I grunted “Well, when we get to the City we can sell these nags and at least have some coin in our pockets. I would also suspect that there is a need for those with minds who are weak but backs that are strong since I have never seen a large city that did not need those who do manual labor. It is not much really but it is a start.”

At least we had a plan, even if it was not one that promised great things. "That sounds like a good start at least," I told Uruz. "If we look around and make a few inquires I am sure we can find something. " My horse neighed slightly and tossed her head, though she did not stop walking. "I think this one is getting thirsty," I said.

I started to respond as Eyvind’s mount sounded off and mine grew restles as well. My survival instincts kicked in and my eyes narrowed as I shifted my ax to a more handy position “That or she winds other horses and we are no longer alone.” Maybe I was paranoid but paranoid kept me alive.

I could sense Uruz's caution and I put a hand to my sword just in case. "It could be," I said keeping my voice low and my words short so that we could listen. I could hear some movement due to the light breeze but I strained for something more. Sometimes it would be handy to have the nose of a animal, albeit in skill and not in shape.

I listened a bit more “No bird songs” I idly noted a scant second before I heard the whine of an arrow in flight. Without thought I dove for the ground tackling Eyvind on the way down. We collided with the soil in a bone jarring smack, but I quickly rolled and freed my ax not paying the slight pain any mind. Another arrow whizzed over our heads and the horses shied slightly but not bad we should still be able to capture them again after this encounter I thought as my mind raced.

I heard the arrow but before I could react Uruz was on me and then we were on the ground. I thought I heard something crunch but I was to into the moment to pay it any mind. Another arrow flew and without thinking I scooted toward some bushes, seperating ourselves to make a more difficult target as I drew my sword. I also kept an eye on where Uruz went so that I could provide him assistance if needed. If anything were to happen to him I don't know what I would do.
