Set some months prior to Marie's departure to Alba So I'd ripped my best petticoat – really, it was a silly thing, one overly motivated john and a bit too much to drink, and I'd let him do away with it. Thankfully, it was salvageable, but then I'd lost my last needle and I was running out of thread, and so of course I had to take what menial coin I had with me to Cible. That left me there, frowning at the stacks of thread and wanting something not so bloody white because I expected it would glow in the dark – the petticoat was off-white, nigh beige, and their offerings, really, just didn't do. Even a whore has her moments of coquetry.

On my way home from work I stopped to look around Cible to see if they had any new fabric that I could afford. I had an idea for a new gown but had yet to find the perfect fabric.
I went straight to the fabric section and began looking around, noticing a red haired girl there who looked rather unhappy with the selection. I wondered what it is she might be searching for.

I was getting frustrated with the various rolls of white, yellow and beige threads, and sighed a bit louder. I looked around, and seeing a young woman my age, I supposed she might have be employed there – she had the look of a girl honestly employed, at any rate.
“I'm sorry,” I said with as much of what little manners I had, “do you know if there's something between this, “I held out a roll of beige, then there was a roll of white, “and this?”

I tilted my head a little and considered the rolls of thread she held. “I’m sure there must be,” I said, meeting her eyes and smiling. “They do seem to carry everything here. Do you need a delicate thread such as these or would something a little thicker do?”

She had a nice smile and she looked friendly, and not put off by my manner – I was grateful for that.
“It's for a petticoat,” I replied, shrugging. “I suppose a bit thicker might be fine.” I gave her a bit of a smile, apologetically. “I don't do much in the way of art.”

“Ah, sewing isn’t so much art as patience,” I said with a chuckle. “I’d be more than happy to help if you’d like.”

I blinked, then, and looked at her again. “--- that's very kind of you, but – you don't have to --”
I paused, and blinked another time. “-- I'm Alayne.”

“I’m Marie,” I said with a smile. “And I don’t mind, really. I do quite a lot of sewing, so it would be a quick fix, truly.” I drew a piece of parchment from my pocket, unfolded it, and showed her the sketch. “I am looking for fabric for this gown so I can make it. Really, a petticoat will be easy.”

“... that's a nice gown,” I said, eyes a bit wide. And I tilted my head, looked at her again. “You don't look like an aristo – are you going to a fete or something? I'll help you find the fabric, you help me with the silly petticoat?”
I was embarrassed to say, oh dear, I thought you worked here. She was nice – and I as just a little envious that she was making this gown.

“Thank you,” I said, smiling and then chuckling a little. “I’m not an aristocrat, not even close. I grew up on a farm in Camlach and now I am here staying with my brother and his wife. I work at a shop in the Temple District. As for a fete….” I could feel my smile grow as I thought of Ferris. “There’s this man... and he gets invited to all the fetes. I like to know I have a new dress to wear should he invite me, I don’t want others to think poorly of him because of me.”
I laughed and shook my head. “Listen to me going on and on. I would love help finding fabric and will happily help you with your petticoat.”

I was almost going to ask if she was getting married, but then with Marie's explanation, I was feeling almost a bit worried and sad for her – she looked besotted. And besotted with an aristo, or a proto-aristo, that wasn't always the best situation to be in. It wasn't like they'd suddenly crouch and pick you up from the gutter. They'd just let you be. Unless you were an adept, because adepts were just aristocratic whores with a goddess' blessing.
But she had some light in her eyes and I didn't feel like snuffing that. It's not because you're unhappy, or critical, that others should be made miserable, I decided. Leave that to arses and basterds.
“-- alright, well, what color are you looking for? I think with your hair and fair skin... something earthy, maybe? What's your favorite color?”

“I was thinking green for this gown,” I answered. “It’s one of my favorites and I just kept imagining it that color as I was sketching.”

“Green's earthy,” I drawled, “comes after wood, when you look at a tree.” I grinned, and started to tug Marie towards the fabrics section. “What kind of green?”

“The affordable kind,” I said with a laugh as I followed her. “I have a limited amount I can spend.”

“Aye aye, sister,” I replied. “Let's see what we can find, that'll be fitting and decently priced.”

I laughed again as I followed her, finding myself absolutely delighted with having met her. A green fabric caught my eye and I stopped.
“What about this?” I asked, reaching out to feel the material. It was as soft as a kitten. “Oh, I can tell by the feel it is expensive….”

“Well I hope it don't meow like kittens,”I I said, “because it'd be kinda inconvenient.” I looked at the price tag, then whistled.
“Yeah, that's expensive cotton balls for you, Marie, methinks.”
I showed it to her, though, in case.

She showed me the price and I jerked my hand away. “Something less than half that if we can find it,” I said.

“--- yeah, burns, don't it?” I drawled. “Makes you think them aristos really have buns'o steel if they can withstand that kinda heat.”
I frowned, thinking of how much one could eat with all that money. “Let's get something less insane.”

“Yes, let’s,” I said, giving the fabric one last bewildered look. I couldn’t begin to imagine spending that much money on fabric! What if you spilled something on it? What if someone else did?

I nodded along with Marie, and wandered over to another, a forest green silk. It was nice – very nice, and less expensive, though I couldn't tell if it would be affordable for Marie or not.
“-- what about this one?”
If that was too expensive, maybe a trip to the Yeshuite quarter would be in order, I figured.

“It’s pretty, but still a little high for me,” I said. I sighed and glanced around, wondering if I would ever find the right material. “Perhaps I should look for a different color?”

“Or a different section,” I said, frowning. “Don't they have rebates, here? Things that are just a bit out of style, but still good, and might come cheaper?”

“They do,” I said, glancing around. “There.”
I took her hand this time and led her to the pile of fabrics. “This looks more promising,” I commented, noticing some of the prices.

I was led, and found that Marie was actually quite easy to get along with. Maybe a friend? Shopping with her was fun, at any rate.
“More affordable,” I replied, nodding. “That's about right.” I looked at the fabrics, then at Marie, and frowned thoughtfully. “Well, do you want something summery or wintery?”
I was totally winging this - I didn't know much about that fancy shmancy stuff.

“Summery I think, since I would like to wear it as soon as it’s finished,” I said with a smile.
Just then something caught my eye. “Oh!” I exclaimed and reached for a bundle of material. It was a light, lead green and had just a bit of a shine to it. “What about this?”

I tentatively reached to touch it, and found it... really rich, for the price tag. “-- It's nice,” I said eloquently. “-- I like the color.”

“So do I,” I said, my excitement growing the more I looked at the material. I turned over the edge to examine how it held a cut and was pleased.
“Oh, I think this might be it,” I told her. “Do you really like it?”

“Not that I'm an expert, or anything,” I replied with a small smile. “But I think it's pretty swanky.”
I wished I'd had better words to tell her how nice it was, but as it stood, that was the best I could come up with.

“Swanky? Oh, what a wonderful word!” I said with a grin. “I have to buy it now.”
I tucked the bundle under my arm and said, “Let’s find your thread and then we can get your petticoat fixed.”
